Ok so what does everyone make of this?

Got to yard last night to bring my mare in for the evening as usual. She is out in a field with 2 others horses who have same owner. These other two horses are presently out 24/7. So their owner had already been up (which makes a change) and had given her two horses gorgeous haylage out in the field. Well there was my poor mare stood there with her eyes popping out of her head by the gate waiting patiently to come in. Luckily she knows better than to harrass the other 2 but what if she didn't?

Needless to say I was gobsmacked!!

I was wondering the same, Poppymoo. Is it just one pile? If so, that is a little silly. If not, not such a huge deal (although my ponies cannot have such luxuries just yet, due to waistline maintenance and possibility of LGL/SI aggravation). I would expect someone to tell me if they were planning to start feeding hay in the field, but not sure I'd be gobsmacked to see it (and if they were paying, I'd be thinking, woo! Free hay! lol!).

Ditto the whooo hooo free hay/haylage

I'm usually first one down so I put loads of hay out...then as others turn-out they top up too....well thats the theory, but I have a feeling last winter I was feeding half the yard

Yes - we do the same in the winter - you know snow, frost etc. However they are all stable kept so surely if you want to give your horses more hay you can bring them in!! Also when I say haylage I mean the Horsehage stuff! So expensive and it is just going to get walked in!!

My horses are out all day whilst I am at work....so they get forage in the paddock and a big net when they come in....plus hard-feed if need be...

If there were horses out in a bare paddock all day getting bored they would end up kicking the [****] out of each other.....
...I would rather mine be out getting fresh-air and excercise and eating hay off the floor than stuck in a stable...

.if she want to chuck her money away putting out 'branded' haylage...its up to her surely.....

Ok rant over now - I guess I am just shocked that she didn't take my mare into consideration!! I would always ensure that there was enough piles to keep them all happy! I certainly do not have an issue with her feeding her haylage in the field. Just wished she had spoken to me before!! Ho Hum Rant over now!!!

You don't say how many piles she put out, or why what she does with her horses is a concern of yours?

Surely if you don't like her or her horse management, then you should move your horse out of that field immediately and put it on its own somewhere?

i really don't get the big deal- would it bother you so much if your horse was eating one of the piles and her horse had been at the gate?

totally over-reactive rant imo, and if you are worried about your mare being kicked put her on individual turnout as horses will kick each other for 1000 different reasons.

Can't you move your horse into a field on its own, so what she does won't bother you?

Or go up early to the yard to catch your horse in? Or leave a section of hay/haylage for her to put near the gate for your horse?

It just seems like a lot of fuss about nothing, tbh. I have three living out, and put three piles out, but they always share one pile then move to the next one.

I dont think you were overreacting, I would be pissed off, a fight could have easily broken out between the three horses, I know my horse wouldnt stand there nicely and watch the others eat

i would have been very annoyed as me lad is very greedy and all hell would have broken out if there where not enough piles to go round. he will quite happily eat hay/haylage in the field but hewould have pushed his way in for some ifnot enogh there. i think it was very irrisponsible of the other owner as one of the horses could have got hurt. your mare deseves a medal. my horses get haylage in the fieldin the winter but there is always a couple of extra piles

Thanks smurphy and tikino! I was starting to think I was hormonal and totally over reacting.

Shilasdair - Maybe I should think about putting my horse in a different field! At least then I wouldn't have to do all her poo picking too!! LOL

She just put two piles - 1 for each of her horses! That was it! There are three horses in the field!!!

That would have annoyed me (not the fact she had put haylage out, but 2 piles for 3 horses is asking for trouble). I would have a quiet word and ask her to either get you to put it out after you have got yours in or put a pile of your haylage out for your horse too so there is no chance of fighting.

I would have though putting more than enough piles for all the horses in the field was just good manners.

no your not being hormonal and the other owner is being unconsederate would she pay the vet bills if your horse got hurt proberly no and i am sure she would not be very happy if your horses hurt hers. THE POINT OF THIS POST WAS SHE DIDN'T PUT OUT ENOUGH PILES FOR THE HORSES IN THE FIELD POTIENTUALLY CAUSING THE HORSES TO FIGHT.

Right...I'm back from lunch now, and had a little catch up....

Soooo.....the main point was the number of piles of haylage put out...not that fact that haylage was put out per se.......yep- fair point, should be more piles than horses so they can shoo each other off and move around...sometimes its like magic roundabout they move around piles so much they snatch a mouthful of each and move on....

You didnt make that fully clear TBH...if you had have done we could have all joined in the rant

I'd have been miffed too to be honest - it's common sense to put at least 3 piles down if there are 3 horses. Like others have said my lad would not stand & watch others eat - he'd have ended up in a fight for the haylage, well actually, there's quite a lot of him so he'd have ended up with at least 1 pile & her horse(s) would've gone hungry!!! I don't even like to think what lengths he'd have gone to to bag himself a pile!!!!!
I think perhaps either move your horse or ask your friend to pop an extra pile in or even say that you'll put haylage out when you've brought your mare in if you don't mind the extra work.
Understand where you're coming from tho...

no problem as you had a fair point and no one understood

I understood exactly what you meant, & yes I agree you were totally justified in being upset. One pile per horse plus one more is the best way. It's not as if you were asking for her to feed your horse FOC - as you said you'd have been quite happy to add a bit once your mare was in to make up for any she may have eaten.

I would take a big breath (and yes I would have been rather annoyed purely from the possibility of fights and injuries point of view) and ask that if you left out some hay, could she please chuck down a third pile so they all could eat and minimise the risk of fights.

Alternatively see if you can move to a field where the horses are not being fed at the moment.

I am lucky, I put down one big pile and my two share happily, as long as Farra believes she is in charge, Stinky just slinks round her if she looks grumpy. Daft bugger won't eat from his own pile if I put one out as he just wants to be eating with her.
