have just started on haylage and understand it has a short life once opened, mine has been open 6 days still smells nice and not warm, is it ok until smell changes or should i leave it.my horses gobble haylage but my supplier and most farmers in lincs have made theirs into haylage this year so im going to have to get used to it.

Our supplier says his haylage is definately ok for 10 days but it can depend on the weather. If its hot it goes off quicker, if its cold it stays ok longer. Saying that his haylage is quite dry and not wet and smelly. Im over cautious and would like it used in no more than a week.

It depends how "wet" they haylage is. The drier it is the longer it will last. I have some really dry stuff that lasts 2weeks + when opened. The white stuff is usually yeast not mould, you will know when it is past its use by the smell.
