haylage question

I currently feed hay and always have done. However, I'd like to change to haylage- only because my 2 horses (aged 5 and 6) will be in a lot more work this winter and it'd be a nice treat!
How long does it last everyone before It starts to go off? I'd be buying a big bale but only feeding 2.
Don't want to waste it. Would I manage to get through it or would I be better sticking to hay? Thanks!
 
You will have no problem during the winter mine doesn't last long enough to go off but it will usually be fine in the cooler weather for several weeks, 1 bale fed adlib should last about 10 days between 2 horses maybe a bit less if they are in a lot.
 
I feed adlib. One bale of hay lasts 2 weeks between them, but the haylage bale seems smaller than my usual hay. They come in around 7pm and out again around 6 am so not in too long! Thank you :)
 
The haylage I use is slightly smaller, weight probably much the same but there is more moisture in haylage and it tends to pack tighter, it should last pretty much the same as the hay does but they may enjoy it more so eat a bit faster initially.

We used to feed this on a big yard and would therefore get through it quite quickly but I understood that small bales of haylage have to be fed within 3-5 days and the big bale stuff 7 - 10 days. If you are on a big yard maybe you could share it with others and get them to chip in with the cost.
 
It'd just be my 2 that are in on a night eating it. My Highland pony gets a little in the field when it's extra cold, but she's got over 9 acres to herself and the grass is good all year so doesn't really need it. So I guess that's 3 I'm feeding ;) it's a private yard and the other horses on their get their hay from the land so no need to share with me. ;) I'm the only 'livery'
 
How long are people finding their haylage lasting this winter as the weather isn't too bad? I've worked out it would need to last me 3 weeks for it to be worthwhile getting (not going off in 3 weeks)...
 
Our Haylage is fairly dry, I totally unwrap then leave in hay barn uncovered until used, I get through one big bale of Haylage every ten days as both are shut on yard at moment and fed AdLib (15.2 &16hh) however you could leave ours easily 3 weeks and it would be fine - prob longer in cold weather. Much more economical to feed than hay for mine.
