Hello,

Does anyone know how long good quality unopened haylage can last for. I usually buy and use haylage within 12/13 months of purchase. Can it last for longer?

Thank you.

Depends on the quality - we've just opened a large (6x4ft) double-wrapped bale that was baled 2 years ago & kept outdoors and it's super - horses love it.

Our friend who does alot of silage/haylage says its not up to much come the following April/May time & you may as well bin it. Have to admit i wouldnt buy anything older than baled last year, the chances of it being pants & knackered are quite high, it doesnt take much to puncture the bales.

I have unexpectedly had the use of a large field and can't believe I have not fed any of my haylage for the winter yet (suppose I am really lucky). Both horse and pony have gained weight on the grass and look a little plump and I am thinking of sectioning them into a smaller area. Just worried about my lovely winter haylage and whether it will last until next winter. Doesn't have to be very nutritious, just safe.

Thanks for replies.
