My horse prefers haylage to hay so I'm swapping her over both in the field and stable.

Am I right in thinking that haylage has a higher nutritional value than hay but because it contains more water you have to feed more? How much more should I feed? Other than the water content, what are the other main nutritional differences?

How long does a haylage bale last and how can you maximise this? The bales are very large! And most important, what do I look for in a bale to know the quality? I've noticed that sometimes the bales are quite warm inside - is this good or bad?

Any info/tips would be much appreciated.

We make our own haylege, in huge round bales, we have had one open for 2 weeks and its still absolutely fine.

Ours arent getting it in thefield yet, but when they d we have always fed it adlib, however they all got fat last winter so will have to keep an eye on them this year!

as with anyting how much your horse should get depends on your horse.
