I bought in 20 large bales of haylage in the summer - I got it for a good price and was very impressed when opening the first bale as smells and looks yummy, with the horses certainly agreeing!
They have been on it for a couple of weeks but it appears to be heating them up and giving them the squits- they have also been turned out on to their winter grazing which is quite lush, so could be the combination of both?
I am only giving minimal, non heating hard feed, and they are excercised daily. I am also restricting how much they have, although would normally feed haylage ad lib but don't dare risk it!
My question is will they adjust to it and settle down, or have I just filled my barn with haylage I won't be able to feed!!?
Thanks

I would say so - yes. Lush wet grass = squits. So good grazing combined with good haylage and grub and going to result in horses feeling well.

Are they out 24/7 or stabled overnight????

Coming in at night now and have been for the last 2 weeks, hence starting the new big bales. They have always been fed haylage, so should be used to it. I did wonder whether to pop them on the Naf haylage balancer for a couple of weeks until they settle into the winter routine....?

Maybe they need to have it introduced a bit more slowly so their guts acclimatise? Perhaps buy a couple of small bales of hay and mix it in with the haylage for a few nights?
