I would be grateful for some advice about haylage. As my local hay man has retired and due to the bad weather it seems this year for the first time I may have to try haylage. A guy who lives close to me is making it and says he is going to bale it in large round bales. He will deliver me one when I need it but what I do not know is has a round bale got a kind of shelf life when it is opened? Does it go mildew? Is there a point when I should not feed? I am feeling nervous about it so could anyone give me the benefit of their experience. I have my horses at home so I do not have a yard environment to ask others. Thanks.
 
It depends on the water content of the haylage how long it will last once opened. Haylage is made to seal out oxygen, so in its absence the haylage 'ferments' then remains stable. As soon as you open it, and let air in, normal decomposition restarts. If the haylage is very dry, it will probably last for 2 or even 3 weeks open. If it is very wet, it will start to rot more quickly, and may need used within 5 - 7 days.
Sorry not to give a more precise answer.
I found last winter, I was using a big round bale in about 7 days for three full size horses, if that helps?

Thank you for the advice. It seems that I need to be cautious so I think I will have a look around before deciding. I think large round bales would be unsuitable as I have 2 15 hands and a retired moorland pony. As a fairly new member to the forum I am finding it a great resource. Thanks again.

Yeah good idea. I live in mid cornwall and its been very very wet down here so I think any thing cut and baled now will have a high moisture content!!
