What's the white stuff that you sometimes see on haylage when you unwrap a bale?

Secondly, if your bale has this stuff on it do/ would you feed it or chuck it?

White 'mould' that can be brushed off without too much effort is absolutely fine, it's just yeast. If the entire bale is covered in it then I wouldn't feed it, but if just the end sections have it in small amounts, then brush it off and feed it.

Blue/green/yellow/black mould is another matter entirely - this is harmful mould and should not be fed. Tell your supplier if any of your bales have this, and if they're a reputable supplier they should take it away and replace it free of charge

That's what I thought, however the bale that was open at the yard today had loads of the white stuff on it and was also quite wet (which i know some haylage can be) and smelt like blue cheese salad dressing

I ended up chucking most of my girl's night net as wasn't convinced it was any good inspite of the girls at the yard insisting that it was "sugar"

Fortunately there was a new bale open which is perfect so helped myself to some of that

Bluergh, if it smells really foul then follow your instincts and don't feed, as you have done.
