Anybody heard that there is a shortage of haylage. Was told last night that small bales have gone up to £6.50 and big round bales have gone to £25-£30.......Also straw is on a shortage.......... This is in the Nottingham/Derby area..........

Or is somebody scare mongering........AGAIN

Well it shouldn't be for want of a good supply generally - we had fantastic growing weather last summer.

We grown our own on the farm, so never an issue for us.

We have a shortage at our Yard. My yard is also a working farm and YOs OH cuts our own hay and haylage for the year. However he didnt get as much as he normally does last year so we might be having to buy in if we run out...

No apparent problem further south yet. However hay is starting to creap up, but think this is the normal scare mongering to get you to pay too much and buy in more, so they clear there barns before everyone starts turning out 24/7 and they can't get diddly squat for what they have left and have to sell off cheap to clear barn for next crop.

Round here there's a shortage of any type of hay or haylage because there was only one cut last year. (The grass did not grow because it was so hot and dry) I paid £20 each a couple of weeks ago for the whopping great oblong bales of haylage, which is roughly the same as a couple of years ago but hay is between £3.75 and £5 for an ordinary small bale (that's why I bought the haylage!!) and there's hardly any about

Totally agree with Forester, due to the very long dry summer we and most other farmers could only take one cut of haylage cos it just didnt grow. Vast shortage in this area.
