In the summer when liveries use hardly any haylage, we're charged £1 per net, as packed tight as you want it. In the winter we pay £9.50 per week for ad lib haylage.
That's great price my yard owner has decided to charge by the kilo so u have to weigh each net and its going to be 22p per kilo I have a 16.2 friesian that eats a lot so not good
That is a huge amount of hassle. I wonder how quickly they might get bored of that?
As a quick rough calculation - 1 small bale of haylage = 20Kgs. 22p per KG gives a small bale price of £4.40.
So I presume you're not on small bale haylage! That costs about £6 a pack so someone would be making a loss. Large bales tend to be sold on size not weight but weigh roughly 300Kgs. So 22p per Kilo gives a large bale price of £66 - but it could weigh a lot less.
But it does put it into persepctive. Annoying as this is - she might not actually be making any money and it is at least fairer on those whose horses eat less.
This is something our Y/O has been hinting at! We currently pay £17 per week for adlib haylage - all year round. (think its a bit less for ponies, although some of them eat as much as the horses) But I'm not sure how he will monitor it. There are approx 25 horses on the yard with people coming and going throughout the day and early evening and it would mean him either being there all the time or having the haylage locked away and only accessible at certain times.
My current haylage bales cost exactly 22per per kilo so not an unreasonable price IMO. 100kg rectangular bales, £22 each.
Personally I source my haylage myself so no real concern over cost per kilo or net. However I have a poor doer currently getting a total of 10kilos (3 at 3pm and 7 at bedtime) and a good doer getting a total of 5kilos (2 at 3pmthe and 3a at bedtime)
I wouldn't want to have to pay the same set amount for haylage for these two. Think I'd end up over paying for the one that is restricted or not being allowed as much as is required for the skinny
