swapping my horses onto haylage as no one has any hay left. only a small bale how long is it ok for before it goes off and how would i know. they are only getting a small bit and gradually increasing so i assume it is only a few days thanks

A small bale should last 4-5 days when opened. However, it needs to be kept in cool dark place once it is opened. You will know when it goes off as it starts to smell both sweet and sour. If it feels hot inside, this is also a sign it has gone off.

i always find that it smells sort of mushroomy when it's off.
