I have just received my haymaking bill and wondered what the going rate is at the moment? (Small bales) Thanks for any feedback...

umm,
cutting £15 per acre
turning £5 per acre
rowing up £5 per acre
baling about £0.25 per bale
that's a rough estimate, because I don't remember exactly. It will be more if you have fewer acres and also depends which part of the country.

Ok that's useful, many thanks. I have been charged £1.00 a bale BUT the guy who makes it keeps half for himself free. So I am thinking my half should be free too as its my grass :-/

Our neighbour cut ours for us last year (approx 30 acres) and took half instead of charging. Worked well for us as we didn't need all of it and meant he didn't need to buy it in for his cattle. Sounds a little steep if he's charging you £1 per bale as well as taking some for himself..

i didnt make any last year, but in previous years usually comes in at between 90p and 120 per bale. this is for cutting turning rowing up and baling and bringing in on trailer, but not stacking. this doesnt include the fert and spraying.

Hmm thanks for the input. The difficulty is that it's an arrangement this guy had with my parents, who have both now died. So I will have to cough up this time as it was a pre-existing deal. But it will be a hard one to tackle next time when it has always been done this way.

A common deal is contractor/farmer takes half . It would also be your job normally to move and stack your share of the hay. Alternatively pretty much as Martlin describes, remembering of course that in a normal year the hay might be turned several times. Taking half AND charging is not normal

That's good to have my doubts confirmed, thank you Mike007. He did stack it all himself this year, though previously I have helped stack; however his cattle are on site (free of charge in our barn in exchange for doing odd jobs.) It does seem quite an uneven deal...
