My horses are usually fed from hayboxes but have a haynet when I need them to keep still, so last night Sid had one while I was chiselling the mud off.
He seemed to be keeping particulalry still and then I thought maybe he was trying to pull a long stemmed weed out becuase the haynet moved back as
his head did. When I looked closer I could see the net was caught on a tooth - it came unhooked as I pulled him in closer.
I have never seen this happen before and wonder what would have happened if I hadnt been there. He was a bit mouthy for a few minutes but soon went back to eating.
Anyone else had this happen?

We only use haynets when under close supervision because my 1st RI (many years ago) had witnessed a pony strangle in a haynet and would never use them. Horrible dangerous things. I'm glad no real damage was done to your horse.

Hate them! Had to set many ponies free from poorly tied nets or nets that weren't hung up and fallen down, thankfully none of the horses sustained bad injuries as I caught them in time. I always feed off the floor 99% of the time... but do use one under close supervision if I needed to clip a horse or when bathing to help keep them still.

I use a hay ball as don't like hay nets only use them in trailer and camps, use to use them also for sheep but lost lamb, strangled, so rather waste a bit of hay than loose a life.

I hate hay nets - only use them in the lorry/trailer and even there I have had horses put their feet through them. Horses naturally eat off the ground - they are designed to do so. The gastric juices are released when the head is down and these juices help the horse digest the food correctly. The horses lungs also drain when the head is down - this stops them getting fluid on the lungs which happens to horses when travelling and their heads are kep up for long periods (know as shipping fever and the mortality rate is significant). Study nature and follow it!
