My pony has his hay in a haybar and I want to keep it that way but a friend suggested to slow down his eating by putting his hay in a haynet and then putting it in the haybar. Surely this in dangerous tho as he can pull the haynet out??? just wondered if anyone else does this??:confused:

I wouldnt do that, not worth the risk. Apart from anything else it cant be good for the horses neck and back, haynets aren't healthy anyway. The tugging at it motion whether its on the wall or in a haybar isnt good in general for their necks/backs.

Just attach a clip in the bottom and then clip the haynet onto that. I used to net mine up and then put into a wooden freestanding hay rack and he never managed to pull it out. :)

I'd put a ring at the bottom (as far down as you can reach easily) and tie the haynet to that. I wouldn't use a clip as have seen horrible injuries to horses' lips from playing with a clip and getting caught. As the net is behind the haybar it's obv fine to tie it far lower than you would normally, since they can't get their feet in it because of the haybar.

Never even thought to put type as im so used to using them, but i only use those heavy karabiner clips with the screw lock on them, which prevents them from opening, and prevents nosy horses getting their lips/nostrils caught in them.
My boy would be one of those who would attach himself to the wall so they are the only clips i use. Very handy for all sorts of things too, i have a bagfull of them :D

I've just started netting my hay in a hay bar as I'm fed up with them scooping the whole lot out, dragging it through their beds and pooing on it.
I'm not a fan of nets but hay is too expensive these days to keep putting it on the muck heap IMO!
I have put a tie ring in the corner about level with the top of the hay bar neither of mine (16.2) have got the nets out and it's saved me about 1 1/2 bales per week ( neither are pigs though always have some left and both on ad lib)
Hope this helps
