I don't like doing it, but have on occasion when its very windy. We use tractor tyres to put the hay in to stop it being wasted, I know some on here don't like them but they do seem helpful.
I do, but we have a high hawthorn hedge with some very solid branches. I hang them in there which also offers a bit of shelter. It does make less mess on the ground but the main reason is so that the pesky sheep dont eat more of my hay than my ponies do!
I just give mine a pile of loose hay.
Nets are fine though, IF you have somehwere to tie them up high enough. Most Post and Rail fencing is low and your Horse could put a leg/foot through it.
Im just in two minds really because I dont really like the idea of hanging them high because I like the whole eating from the ground because its more natural and better for them but then I dont want to waste a load of hay. Thanks for your replies though
I've boought a shires hay bag for the field. theres a net part of it, ptobably about half of the front of the bag, then the rest is strong sturdy material. I think it will be better than a normal hay net, but I am yet to try it in the field.
