Thinking about changing my 511 for a 610. My main reason to do so would be so I could take my 14.2 as well as two of my daughter's 11.2s.

My question is really, what size of horses do people fit in these. I've looked on the IW page and I can see what they say fits, but I want real life opinions.

My 14.2 is very large for her height, not fat but a well built cob which wears a 6ft3 rug. Is she going to fit with two others. Looking to the future, would I fit a 13.2, 14.2 and a smaller pony in or not?

Can you put a big horse herringbone with the telescopic partitions or would you need a central partition as well.

Thanks in advance!

I have also been looking at these but to transport 2 17hh horses instead that weight 1.8 tonnes.

It seems to be very hard to find anything out about them apart from what the dealers want to tell you. I really wanted the Cheval Optimax but was told that was to flimsy for my horses.

Most of the 610 adverts i have seen have had nearly new trailers and I have wondered why.
There are a few on horsemart.

I have a cheval 4003 which I travel a 14.2 sec D in (6ft3 rug) he fits fine herringbone, and a 13.2 pony. I only travel two but I could fit a third in up to 14.2.

The IFW610 has a wider internal width than the cheval so would have thought you'd be fine - especially as you can just increase the angle of the partitions for a longer horse.

Just literally been going through this choosing a trailer for ours over the past few weeks. However I have a 17.2, 16.3 and 15.2 I had to look at the bigger trailers to allow for the 17.2 to travel with either of the other two. Equitrek seemed flimsy, Ifor 511 seemed extremely cramped, hence we looked at the 610. I just did not think it was as sturdy as the really old ifors were, very basic and the price tags even second hand were very punchy. Happened on a 3 horse Wessex Olympian at the weekend. Never seen a Wessex trailer before, but I was astounded how well designed and solid they are. Added to that the value for money is really good. They have very decent solid partitions, the walls and sides are really well padded and it's nice and bright. It would allow us to easily fit all 3 of ours in (not that we probably would ever need to). If I had seen a two horse Olympian close by then I would have been happy with that but the three horse set up is a bonus. They are on hold with manufacturing new ones at the moment, so they may not be that easy to get hold of. Also if they are of the era for the thermoplastic non-rot floor budget to replace with aluminum. Most have been done already like ours, but there may be some still around.

I don't know about the larger Ifors, but my friends have a Cheval Liberte Optimax, which can stall 4 ponies or 3 horses herringbone. it is a lovely trailer, and I know my friends prefer pulling that to the smaller Ifors as it is so much more stable.

Thanks everyone that's really helpful. We've been humming and hawing about a lorry but this would be a cheaper option.

Will look at those other makes too. It's hard to work it out just from dealer info isn't it!

Living would be nice but mostly want to be able to tack up inside when it's hammering down (often!) and travel more than 2. We can't get rid of the pick ups as we need them for work so this would seem a better option than running another vehicle.

The 511 is too narrow to tack up the 14.2 2 easily with the partition in, I can tack up my 15.2 ok because her wide bit is higher up!

Just had a google of the Olympian treble. Do two stand forward facing and the smaller one rear? Couldn't work it out. Not sure I could tack up in it with it not being herringbone

I was looking at these, but concluded it would required 'balancing' the load of ponies every time to make sure the weight wasn't too far forward or behind the axles. Does it make much difference in practice?

I think they are essentially a live stock trailer with fancy panels so I don't think it would be that difficult Penny. I have a stock trailer which is the same idea really and carry 3 cows in separate partitions and it's no problem. I would put the heaviest one in the middle ideally so it's over the axels. I can put 13.2 and smaller in that trailer but it's not as wide as the HB610 and lacks telescopic partitions.

Friends of mine had one and somehow managed to fit in a big 16.2, a 15 hander and a 12.2 plus everything they required for a week at PC camp, to say I was horrified when I saw how laden it was was an understatement, the towing vehicle did struggle that day but in general they had enough space it was the weight on board that was way over the top, you would be fine with yours and a normal load of kit.

They were in herringbone and the big, probably 6ft9in rugs, horse had plenty of space.

Ha ha so I could buy the 17hh schoolmaster SJ I've got my eye on and fit him in too then. Thanks BP ;)

ive been looking at these as well.. ive found a fair number of reviews that say they dont tow very well and are pretty unstable. Could you not customise a 7ft high stock trailer to do what you want?

That's interesting and I wonder why when it looks like it's it's just a stock box. Perhaps tow vehicles are under powered, it's a big trailer if people aren't used to it. Or of course it could be the height and width combined.

I think the eventa must be horrific to tow with the little wheels underneath. I just wouldn't have one of them having had a stock box with wheels underneath.

Tried converting stock boxes before, don't really want to do it again.

My yard owner has a 610, and has travelled 3'racehorses in it at a time quite often, it is huge to tow tho (need a really good strong vehicle) and it's wider and longer so manoeuvring is a pain in the bum

Thanks Dizzy. It would carry what I need then no problem!

I'm not worried about towing or manoeuvring it as my day job is hauling cattle around in something equally heavy.

i had the stock box with the wheels under it as well and it was scary to tow.

sorry to side track slightly but id be interested to hear your experiences converting a stock box as im pondering the same...

No worries side tracking is good.

I did it in a rush so I could take my new horse (and another) on holiday and the guy who did it charged a lot for a very heavy partition and not a great job. However it could easily be done and depending on the size of the ponies you might get them on sideways with standard divisions. My stock box is 5ft9 wide and 12ft long. I did it forward facing and there's plenty of room for that. It's much wider, airier and has more light so they like to travel in it. It's also a lot stronger so no danger of them breaking it. I didn't have any padding except the breast bar and it was completely fine for my horses who all travel well. I mainly used it with a full breast bar and one horse or the ponies with normal cattle divisions. My 13.2 who is a 5ft rug can travel sideways. It's not a high roof but I travelled up to 15.2s in it with no problem. Did put a poll guard on to start with!

Oh and mine aren't shod so had no issues with the metal ramp. I did fit rubber mats inside in the end but they stood on the galv floor no problem too.

I then separately looked at getting the IW dealer to convert one of their trailers to a hydraulic deck. They looked into it but the trailer structure wasn't strong enough they said to do it. That would make me wonder how horse partitions would be attached in a stock box. A wheels under is 6ft6 wide and much better for the job other than the quite big issue that I felt mine could tip over at any time and often had to sit at 35mph. I hated it and wouldn't get another one with small wheels. Do have a flatbed like it and it's fine but I don't personally believe they are suitable for a moving load!

thank you for that! Very informative!! I felt exactly the same about my DP120, I had my 13hh in it and felt it could tip at any time, i sat on the dualcarriageway at about 35mph as well!

Ive been scouring the country for months for a 7ft high TA510 but reading your post is making me wonder.... i basically need a stock box that can do everything for me - sheep and ponies, my highland is barely 14hh though, i just assumed Id need the extra headroom.

With the Olympian 2 travel facing forwards and the smallest one is facing rear. You would never load the front partition without using the two at the rear first as this would cause imbalance. It is 1150kg unladen and you have the option to rate it at 2600kg (standard) or 3000kg, depends how you would use it. As you have smaller ponies you don't have the same length issue as we do, so you could go herringbone trailer whereas we couldn't. The 610 for us would only take 2 horses and I just didn't like the feel of the set up as we are used to a very solid 7.5t wagon (off the road being modified hence buying the trailer). The Olympian had a more lorry like quality/feel and plenty of room for a 17.2 who's in a 7ft rug and likes to boot the hell out of stables and transport if he's that way out. If I had small ponies I would of course of had the option to consider herringbone and probably would have also looked at the Bockman's

Just been looking at the Chevalier Liberte optimax 2016 4 horse trailer. I'm sold. Particularly like the alu body so no soft paint to scratch and the fact you can pressure wash the inside without it falling to bits. Going to the dealer to see one in the flesh in the next few weeks. Yum!

I did like the look of those the only thing I did not like the idea of was the roller blind at the back. Depends how flimsy it is in the flesh. You do need to actually see the trailers to get an idea of how solid they are, most look great in a photo. If you get a good dealer with a few different makes it really helps to see them all together at the same time and work out pros and cons.

I agree I don't like the blind which is why I would get the barn doors option, that looks a lot better. I'm going down to JSW and they have fautras and other makes i can see too. I like the fautras but I don't like their partitions. The CL has an upgrade option to steel partitions which I like the look of. That said, mine are small and not violent travellers so the standard ones may be fine. Reckon I will sell my 511 now and go back to "cattle class" for a while so I'm ready to move on it lol

I did wonder where you put the haynets in the sideways ones but hopefully there is room for my little beasts.
