:) Just went out to take marmite water to my horse, latest suggestion, looked at his water buckets and he has had a drink, only about 1/2 bucket but as that was the first drink since yesterday at 4pm I am just so relieved:) I then went in with a bucket to top up and he dived in and drank, really thirstily only a small amount but things are looking up, the famous HHO vibes are obviously working :D

Perhaps he was horrified at the idea of Marmite and decided to drink the plain water before it got taken away! Seriously though great news. Hope he mends quickly.

Now thats a thought:D maybe a plan of action, offer something horrid then he will be grateful for what he has;)

What a good boy :) I've never heard of marmite water either but I suppose it makes sense as it's yeast and salty so no doubt some horses love it ... and some hate it :D

Someone suggested it and as he loves brewers yeast it made sense to try it, not impressed but anything worth trying when you get desperate. Off out in a minute to see if he has had anymore and to dish up supper:)

Thanks PS just going out to do the horses now, fingers crossed he has drunk more overnight.

Hope your boy is doing well today and continues to improve:)

Still reluctant to drink properly although when he does he seems really thirsty but then just takes a small quantity as if he cannot drink more for some reason, pain not a likely cause, it is almost as if he finds it tastes wrong, flavouring has not really helped:confused:

Have spoken to the vet and we are stopping the potassium iodide to see if that is the cause, hope it is that simple and he can start to drink more.

Great news that he's had a drink :). Hopefully stopping the potassium iodide will help.

Is his temperature normal? I've known horses stop drinking when they have a fever (grasping at straws!).

Temp was ok, have not taken it for a few days, will do so later but he is on a two week course of antibiotics so should be covered, no other signs as he is eating like a horse:D

hate to say it, but my friends stopeed drinking when he had grass sickness, he did recover, and it help him immensly if you picked the water bucket up for him and held it above our waist height. hope he's still well.

Is there something else wrong with him, this sounds really odd. My grass sickness pony couldn't drink either.

I know it sounds odd which is why I am so concerned to find the reason, he got worse after starting on the potassium on Monday, I had waited a few days before starting it as he was really dehydrated when he got back from his 4 days in hospital:( I had got his fluid intake up, not normal but getting there, then started this drug, it is only 5gms daily, you would think it must be fairly powerful for such a tiny amount to treat a 16.1 horse but it is probably the link, just that no one seems aware of this as a side effect, or if they are they are not saying:rolleyes:

In every other way he seems fine, eating well, bright enough for a horse on it's 8th week of box rest, with all the drugs he has had, and is still having, his system is going to be tested and not flushing his kidneys properly will impact on his health at some point.

I just hope it is the potassium iodide and by stopping it he can get back to drinking, the vet will want him back on it but I think if it is the cause a slower recovery from his injury will be the lesser of two evils.
