Ive just been on FB and a Romanian rescue, I said we have healthy dogs being pts for lack of good homes and we shouldnt be importing dogs from abroad for that reason. If anyone wants to help these dogs I suggested they donate and build more shelters, vax & spay as well as educate. Their answer was unbelievable, most of the UK dogs are bully breeds and people dont want them, they want cute dogs:eek: so we are providing them.:mad:

People get a fluffy feeling that they are saving an overseas dog and there is sort of snobbery about it.

It is also easier to get one than deal with rescues here or bother going to the pound rather than clicking a button on a web page. Like the idiots who buy designer breeds they believe what the sellers tell them .... and they get told what they want to hear.

This is where people come in and say you are being cruel and not a dog lover because one dog saved (and the fuzzy feeling a human gets from that) is more important than the bigger picture :)

All bull breeds eh?! I must be seeing things at work then.. 2 cockers, 2 cavvies, more terrier puppies than you can shake a stick at, labs, a frigging "jackapoo", 2 toy poodles... nope they're obviously right, no cute dogs at all!

Also, rescuing a dog (or any other animal for that matter) from the 'nasty foreigners' means you don't have to confront the welfare problems on your own doorstep... There are indeed plenty of animal welfare problems in Romania, but the answer to those lies in building the capacity for Romanians to deal with them themselves - and there are indeed Romanians willing and indeed able to do this. Just swooping in and taking a few of the cuter animals will not solve anything, and that's before we even consider the risk of importing diseases endemic to Romania.

They are telling me it cost between £200-£300 to import over here, thats vaxed, travel and they are spayed and neutered. That seems very cheap to me and take a bit of believing unless they are cutting corners.

The "commercial" shippers are charging about £270 a dog (until the 5 dogs per car rule gets applied) to van them here and neutering & passport in Romania is cheaper than here so £300 isn't far out. (The shippers have a far bit of profit in that figure)

Still dearer than £50 for a UK pound or £200 for a UK rescue that has been matched to suitable owners.

If the rescuing of dogs from overseas was purely motivated by their love of that particular dog for some reason I wouldn't have a problem with it - but to rescue from abroad for the sole reason of having an ''exotic'' looking dog that people will 'aaah' at and remark on, is no great leap from fueling the demand of designer dogs and trends.

Not directly linked to OPs post but I think the people at Norton Heath are importing Romaninan dogs, they defiantely are running a 'rescue' and there were loads of cute but wierd and generally deformed (two hopping lame, one crippled behind and on wheels) dogs knocking about when we jumpnig there a few weeks ago.

Some of the groups bringing in these dogs are the same as used to bring in horses from the Continental meat trade that we are not allowed to discuss.

Think they are connected to someone from Essex who was importing 'rescuing' French horses.......... Where there is suffering there in money (or should that be the other way round).:(

oh well, I love my bull breeds and wouldn't change my little staffords for a so called cute dog but then we have had bull breeds for a very long time and my mother grew up during the war with hers.

I know this can't be done but I would like to make it obligatory that anyone considering having a dog for the first time had to have helped a rescue out in some way or form and then be signed off by said rescue as competent to have a dog! and pay a small fee to said rescue as well.

And while I know we shouldn't avert our eyes from overseas problems, we really should try to get our own house in order before even contemplating sorting out someone else's.

So tonight, on facebook, trying frantically through contacts to try to help a rescue find a place for a stafford x bitch that was taken off the streets but new owner now can't/wont keep it. Can't get it into a rescue himself so has said he will chuck her back out. You can see why I don't have a lot of time for people going overseas..
