A girl I know has just paid £220 for a pup. CKCS x chihuahua. Apparently as the parents were pedigree that makes it ok and she's getting the best out of both worlds. I don't even know where to begin.
Does she have much luck on the Lottery? The odds of getting the "best of both breeds" is about the same as getting a decent lottery win but if the dice falls the other way it could cost much more than the price of a lottery ticket.
I was horrifed to see someone claiming that crossing two breeds ensures better health for the puppies on a springer facebook group last week. Totally ridiculous. Fortunately someone told her that only health testing will work towards ensuring healthy offspring before I could tell her how wrong she was!
Instead of 'Dangerous Dogs' programmes that really just show up the dog wardens that they have on, they should be doing a programme to educate Jo Public what questions should be getting asked when getting a puppy, just because the parents are pedigree and KC registered doesn't mean they should be breeding, at £220 a pup what are the chances that health tests have been carried out on either parent, how much money has been spent travelling to shows/obedience trials/agility to prove that the dog(s) have something to pass onto offspring other than health issues (due to there not being any health tests), will the breeder take the dog back at any stage in it's life if circumstances change, did you pick the puppy up in a car park and never seen it's mother so have no idea of temperament!!!
I understand the breeds being expensive when they are having to shell out for extra vets fees to confirm the dog doesn't shed, however how many of them actually do this now and how many of them say it's crossed with xxx so it won't shed and is hypoallergenic!!
