Hi everyone,

Looking for fellow HB505r or 510 users.

I have an Ifor Williams HB505R from 1997 and am looking for the correct fitting instructions for the head guard so that it can be safely used, and not lifted off during travel by head scratching/messing around etc.

The photos show the head partition/guard and front partition as is fitted in the trailer, just not in situ as everything is out for cleaning. The front elastics hook onto hooks on the front wall. Does anyone have any more knowledge regarding it's safety fittings or lack of them?

I have contacted IW UK with question but incase they don't have archives or staff that were around at the time of fabrication/use I'm hoping someone here has experience with/knowledge of this older head guard setup.

Thanks, kind regards to all x

PS link to photos as can't upload here?!? https://www.newrider.com/threads/head-partition-hb505r.257418/

I hope this message is in the right place, sorry if not, new to this!

Yes, I have an older one of these. I just tie the pin down so that it cannot lift out; never had a problem, and I travel two stallions together with it in.

Thankyou Cortez,
Hope it's not a silly question, but do you mean the pins/spikes that slot down into the partition on the guard or the pin/spike that is in the grill facing upwards towards the back of the guard?

Do you have photos of your setup?
Is it a more permanent fixing, and therefore how about practicality for taking off guard for unloading via front ramp or do you leave on / rear unload?

Thankyou

It's a simple bootlace tie that goes from the ring at the top of the ring around the bottom of the pin that sticks out from the attachment where it goes onto the central divider. It's knotted with a quick release knot and is very quick and easy to undo.

No pics, sorry :(

Ah, it's a little different to mine, however you can easily just tie through the mesh and around the top of the divider with a piece of string and a quick release knot.

Thankyou Cortez, sorry I'm a little confused, although I'm having a good laugh thinking of the games of charades/pictionary and the like, I used to play as a kid.:D

Not sure which rings you are mentionning, unless you are referring to the tube ends/top/bottom in which the head guard spikes/pins slot into on the partition? In which case are you meaning a set up kind of like in this photo?

I've put red to indicate a potential shoelace "path" or be clearer on the top one tried out.

I haven't managed to get it tight enough yet so as it can't lift enough to free the lace on the bottom edges....might have too much stretch in my lace, but going to try things out along these lines.

I'm interested to know how Ifor originally advised for it's safe use, or if they met the same security issus I'm faced with, and just phased into the newer version with the pin and ring system, and everyone with the older version just had to use inititive to problem-solve like you did Cortez.

Haha perhaps that's why I can't find the rings you mentioned... lol
Yes, also a good idea that, will brainstorm horse-proofing the quick release knotted string, and placing on back end of divider where there is a spike probably destined for that use in someway. Thanks

I will warn you if stoop down and stand up and and band your head on the bottom of it , it really really hurts

Yes!!!! Fortunately (?) it lifts out at the mo when impact from underneath, but when I've got the fixings sorted, I'm guessing it could be solid enough to drop us to our knees with a good head whack during standing up!

Touch wood I've not yet done that on that, but i'm sure I'd learn new swear words I didn't know exist!!

It's sillly but we oblige kids to have helmets on around horses off the back and on, and also for horse industry employees but yet often don't bother as adults around our own horses, especially if well-behaved and out of "training" situations...which is definately a case where I should "walk the talk"...although I'm sure it'll happen with the horse in the field, and me just preparing the trailer because i'm not used to having the divider in! hahaha A good reminder thankyou Goldenstar:)
