Hello, wondering if anyone could help? Horse is due to be referred to specialist vets when am able but could anyone share any experience in the mean time?
Vet has been out- sedated, cleaned ear, bute, antibiotics. Equine dentist has been. Seen physio along side the vet.
Now a few months ago I had trouble going near his head, couldn't get a headcollar/bridle on barely, awful to ride just avoiding the contact and wanting to go up. Trying to bite, licking, chewing, yawning. Couldn't touch his left ear. Vet out and done above and said to turn away until safe to go to the vets. Since still no improvement now dramatically chucking his head around, rearing, eating his own poo and still biting, licking, chewing. Hes getting fat as not doing anything and we have good grass, he's never had any real time off and I'm just sat here waiting for the okay. Anyone shed any light? I have a couple of ideas but as you know they are the worst sort of ideas!

If the vet cleaned out his ear and gave antibiotics, presumably there was signs of an infection in there? Or was that a precaution?

I can understand your thinking that there may be something dire going on.. But simple things first.

Antibiotics were just a precaution.
The trouble with the head you automatically think the worst!

Might be worth x raying the mouth looking is one thing but you can't see what's going on deep inside, or even some sort of scan of that area I am sure it can be done somehow that would be my next step.

Yes, I was thinking melanoma?

the only reason I asked as we had a lovely lovely mare who started displaying those sorts of behaviour especially under saddle. We went thru all sorts of tests, teeth, head shaking, lessons etc. Then we got a call one day to say she had some sort of seizure and had died. The pm revealed a floating melanoma in her brain which had probably hit some sort of nerve causing a seizure of some type. I’m sorry to tell you this horrible story and hopefully it’s not that but worth mentioning
