Head Raising Bits

Does anyone know any bits that provide a head raising action rather than head lowering? (Other than a dutch gag!

Dutch gag actually can take the head down and in, so not ideal for all these strong cobby types!
Cambridge gag works much better, if used with two reins. Tried and tested on half-Suffolk Punch heavyweight cob

Funnily enough the debate with dutch gag continues. Half insist it lowers half insist it raises and i'm still non the wiser!!

It is for a strong cobby type who now thinks she's a hover.

According to the Neue Schule website, a loose ring waterford is good for raising the head.

Cheltenham gag, loose ring, waterfords stop leaning, or something like a Neue Schule Universal gag

I have a tom thumb in mine which works, had her in neue schule universal previously but her head was near the floor!!

Running gags are the most effect at raising the head

Its also possible to lift the head with a jumper bit / UK style tom thumb (aka Junior cow for the USA)


Waterfords do not raise the head and a universal is the same as a continental gag, first action is to raise, second action with stronger contact lowers it (that's why some say it raises and some say it lowers - but are right, but depends on how strong you are pulling)

Never seen a running gag before so will have to do some research!

Stupid question but how does the tom thumb action differ to that of a dutch gag?
