I've owned my 9 year old mate for 3 years now and when she come to me she would randomly shake her head whilst being ridden and it's been getting worse! I've had her teeth checked, vet out and have her back done every 3 months! Personally I think it's become a habit but it's starting to get annoying/dangerous with how high she's throwing her head!! Anyone else had this problem and have any suggestions on how to stop this habit?!?

My horse is a HS he came on gradually but I had him diagnosed. Sometime with him he does it as a matter of course to get out of things, it is knowing whats causing it. He also can stargaze it sometime seems very extreme to get out of work. you know your horse best and its knowing if there really is something irritating them or just naughty.

I cant really help except my mare developed head shaking when I rode out at my last yard - we moved and she doesn't do it now.....maybe it was a pollen locally I don't know but it has stopped now.

Oh dear. That does sound annoying and could be dangerous... has the vet checked ears, teeth, nerves and tested for allergies and tried anti-histamines yet?

The other thing to do is make sure there's no undue pressure from the bridle or headcollar on the poll area, you could even try eliminating the noseband to see if the pressure from that is making her head-shake. Saddle's pinching can often make them do it or by being unbalanced.
