Head torch - who uses one?

Yup, couldn't manage without mine. In fact I have 2, one a wind up one and the other a Petzl. Absolutely indispensable for the winter!

I'm looking for one for the winter, we have lights on the yard but they don't light the winter paddocks. I didn't just want to go out and buy one though as i want to make sure it would be bright enough so i can clear the paddock once the horses are in, so thought you would know of good ones. :)

I have a simple one from Go outdoors I think - works brill to find ponies in the dark and bring them in etc

Only thing I would say though is all headlights are quite a focused beam so if by clearing the field you mean pooh picking etc I think you would be better with a big search light/ torch as you would be walking up and down in small strips other wise.

I have several they are great - one in the plaiting kit for those early show mornings, one in the truck so that I can find stuff in the truck and then I have one with a red shield that I use when checking the broodmares prior to foaling - it doesn't upset them like the bright light does.

This one. It's expensive but all my other broke really quickly. You can adjust the angle of the light and the brightness, it's lightweight and has a very bright beam. But because you can turn it right down too, you can brush your horses face or put on headcollars without blinding them! Also I wanted one that didn't have the central strap over your head, as I found this made them ride up when I was wearing a woolly hat, effectively pulling it off.

I love it and wouldn't know what to do without it :)

I got a cheapie one at the garage where I was filling up with petrol. Only £1.99! But if you strap it round your head, as per the strap thingy that it comes on, then the beam blasts all the way off to Alpha Centauri. This is great if you keep a horse on Alpha Centauri but not if you just want to see the way to the muck heap without breaking your neck. The only way to make it work would be to a) strap it under your chin or b) walk with your head at a permanent 90 degree angle, thus risking arthritis by the end of the winter!

Mine's in the bin now!

I've got a Petzl one too, I had a couple of cheap ones previously but I found it was worth spending the extra for a decent one, the light is much better from the Petzl and it has the red light option which is very useful for the horse that I do in the am who doesn't like the bright white light.

Petzl ones are great and expecially the LED ones. I use one all winter as I have no lights at all in field or stable and do everything, including muck out with my head torch light.

I use a PETZL one too with rechargeable batteries. There is a flickable thing on the front of the light which alters the beam to a bright narrow focus or a wider beam and you can also press a button for an extra intense beam which is useful when finding horses in the dark.

The only thing I would say is that they are more comfortable when worn over a hat - which in winter you do anyway. I have also been known to ride in one and place a Red LED to the back. I have even forgot to remove it and had a jumping lesson and it never moved!

Horses are a little wary of them at first but soon get used to them especially when they realise that the light means that food is coming!

I recentlt bought one from B and Q for £7.99. Its LED and akso turns red if needed. Its so light that once I've walked my gees down the dark field, I keep it on while mucking out. Its a first time try this winter for me - amazed I never got one before!!!

I have to say after reading this thread I went and bought myself a Petzl one, and I can't believe I have never used one in past winters! Its going to cut my shavings bill down as I could actually see what I was doing when mucking out this morning.

Very grateful to this thread :D

I bought a wind-up one in Countrywide. It has three LED settings : one on; three on and (why would you want it?) a flashing one. It was £4.99 reduced from £9.99. They say one wind-up lasts 20 minutes but I haven't had to use it yet but at least no batteries to worry about

The flashing one is for letting your horse know that if he doesn't get caught soon he will be arrested for failing to stop when requested!
