Hi there, afraid I don’t post much although I’m an avid reader of HHO and feel I’ve learnt a lot here over the years. I’m after some advice about my boy – sorry if I get this wrong but I’m not sure of the correct technical term for the sticky out bony bit behind his eyes. One of these is enlarged – almost similar to when you have knocked heads and get a hard lump. The quandary is that there is no heat, he’s not bothered with you touching or pressing it, he acts/rides like his usual self (the bridle doesn’t touch it in any way). Its rock hard, not fluidy and there is absolutely no surface damage to the hair or skin at all – which I would have thought there would be had there been any sort of trauma. He’s not the kind to throw himself about, although he can be playful at times, but none of the others he’s turned out with are nasty and we very rarely have any injuries other than the odd bite.

He is a grey so I’m paranoid about growths anyway but it’s been nearly a week now and it hasn’t gone down at all – if anything it may be ever so slighter larger than when I first noticed it. Has anyone experienced this? Is it likely to be a fracture with no surface damage (and increase in size) or perhaps it is a growth but it feels like bone and appears to be on bone.

I would call the vet in an instant if he was tender on it or if it bothered him in any way and will do so if it remains. But I just wondered if anyone had any thoughts on what it may be.

Thanks for reading!

my tb once brained himself being excited about being fed (idiot). he ended up with a lump similar to the one you describe due to trauma to the bone. the vet saw it and said it would reduce over time. it took about 6 months to disapear.

But if you are worried that it may be something else, best get the vet!

Thanks OrangeEmpire, it is most likely he's bumped himself and that was my first thougt before I started obsessing! Good to hear your experience but as you say I will speak to the vet if it continues to concern me.

I have just registered so I can post to you, I too read HHF a lot but have never posted.
My sister-in-law has a grey mare, who has a very large lump on her head, it seemed to appear one day and got bigger fairly quickly. When the vet checked it, he strongly expected a mellonoma, but he did say that it shouldn't cause any problems. He could operate to remove it but then you get into the whole issue of breaking the cells and causing them to spread. She is retired and lives out but she leads a perfectly normal life and it doesn't cause her any problems at all. I would get the vet just to put your mind at rest, but don't worry too much. Keep us updated

Emmaandjoey thanks so much I really appreciate you taking the time to register and reply. My OH and others at the yard think I'm being paranoid but with two sarcoids already I really don't think you can be too careful. I'm monitoring it carefully and will contact the vet if it continues. I'm sorry to hear about your sisters mare it is frightening how quickly these things can grow.
