I have had probs all last year with hats i was buying (size 57 / 2) that were great to start with and then as the padding wore they started to move about on my head and ended up to big, espec on a cold day!

So after MUCH deliberation and fitting at a couple of different shops I forked out for a gatehouse hs1 in silver:D Felt like it covered more of my head that any other style i tried and felt really safe

The fitter told me I should be buying a size 56 or 1.5 as well, which I did.

- now this hat felt tight, but ok... and i wore it for about an hour at home as sdvised by the shop to make sure it wasnt uncomfy. As i said, it felt tight, but not uncomfy, although it did leave a red mark on my forehead.

Since then, ive worn it maybe 6 times out hacking and once for a lesson. In my lesson I got really hot and the hat ended up giving me so much pain in my head I almost threw myself off and ripped it off my head! Out hacking its been ok, still feels tight, and I have a red mark on my forehead everytime I wear it. A few times ive ended up with a headache while out riding.:rolleyes:However, the past 2 weeks, in the evenings Ive had a wered headache, almost like 'pressure' in my head, like it feels as if im wearing a too tight hat, except im not - and this seems to occur after ive had the hs1 on during the day

I wore my old dublin onyx skull cap today and I felt fine.... and still do now.

Hubby is NOT going to be happy as it cost so much. Does anyone know what the market is like for 2nd hand hats? I know id be wary if it were me, but its honestly immaculate! Has anyone else had this prob?

i have one of these hats and haven't had any problems.
i know a loose hat's dangerous but as you have discovered a tight fitting hat is really bad news as well!!

i'd go back to the shop you bought it from and discuss what you have just told us with them as they are the best people to sort you out and if you are still not happy ask them to advise you on any other hats that may suit you better.

hope that helps!?

i have this problem with my daughter.we have tried virtually every type of hat and they all give her a headache to some degree.unfortunatley she has inherited her dads head shape.i am planning to investigate made to measure as she is riding more although i know this will be expensive.

i had problems with a gatehouse hs1 - i just don't think it fitted my head shape - i was inlcined to go up half a size from my ususal, but as you said was then worried it may become loose, so i have had to buy another champion (which does fit my head!)

I have a Charles Owen show hat, it is like having a vice on my head especially on the sides. When I used to wear it I would always end up with a bad headache.
Recently went to have a new hat fitted, tried on a charles owen and the shop assistant said the shape of my head would not suit a Charles Owen !! She wasn't kidding !!!
I think you may find you are just not suited to that make ?

thats the thing, i love my dublin onyx - but the webbing harness drives me nuts

- and for xc etc i thought i was better going for a more expensive hat.although i used it for xc last year and it was checked at a PC hunter trial and was given the ok. ive just found an onyx with a leather harness so might go for that ...........

I think you have wrong head shape. the HS1 has been the only one I can find to fit me well, I love it and was worth every penny. I didn't fit champions at all. charles owen would seem ok but always gave me a headache, particularly in the summer.

hmmm...... darn it, i was really ken on the hs1 for the simple reason i thought it was safer.....

.............. what do peeps think about using an onyx for xc?

well - thanks for all the advice peeps. I took the hat back to the shop today, and told them I had infact ridden in it, but it was still like new and had the tags on the bag etc. After standing wearing it in teh shop for 5 mins, i took it off and the assistant admitted she could see my forehead was already red/marked.....

.......so, i wavd goodbye to my HS1, (size 56) and ended up witha choice of 2 others that fitted ok! A C&O Adventura size 57 and a Champion Ventair - size 55!!!!!!! Just shows how sized vary! The Adventura DID seem to come further down my head, but I wasnt so keen on the removable insert things that velcro in,, plus ive heard such good things about the ventair, so i went for it! So here I am, wearing it as i type to ensure it really does fit this time! - oh and because it was a size 55 it was way cheaper, so much so I got a new MW rug with the difference!
