I know Forester...IMO and I do risk being shot over this....I have never been fussed over JM at all...just never done anything for me....now Future Illusion on the other hand....

Oh. I'm glad it's not just me, I expected a hail of abuse! He didn't exactly knock my socks off in the Olympics . . . . if they wanted to use a SJ stallion and go through all the expense and palaver of embryo transplant, I'd have used Darco or someone like that (I know he's dead but semen still available)

Darco IMO would have been way too heavy for her. JM has been heavily marketed as an event sire, mainly due to the Hand In Glove TB side of his pedigree, however, IMO his worth as an event sire has yet to be proven as he has not yet got anything old enough to have proven itself...I believe one of his oldest UK eventing sons is Treloar who will even here next year as a 4 yr old...
Definitely think that there are other event sires that would have suited her better.

You know what I mean! As you say, other proven sires would have been better, especially, like I said, given the expense and palaver of embryo transplant. We'll have to wait years to see if they made the right decision particularly as they chose to use him both times

I prefer the filly too. I'm not too fussed with JM myself and felt he didn't perform as well as he could have at the olympics but to be fair it was the olympics and he must be damn good to have got there in the first place. Personally i wouldn't use him but as eventrider says "each to their own"

my opinon of him is not at all based on the olympics...after alll, a lot o fthe top horses had a bad time there - look at Cornet Obolensky - he just genuinely doesn't 'do anything for me' if you know what I mean....He is an undeniably handsome horse and has a marketing machine behind him but at end of day there are IMO much better, more proven and indeed cheaper, stallions out there. For example...Grannus is cheaper!!!! And you can't much more proven (SJ lines of course) than him..not to mention he's dead....

Just as an exercise in fantasy then, who would everyone have picked if they'd been given the job?

An eventer?
Sextus? Mill Law? It's Without Doubt? Primitive Rising? Windfall?

Or a straight sj sire?

Soo many to weigh up.....Fleetwater Opposition would HAVE to be considered, Primitive Rising definately, Cavalier Royale (still semen available in Ireland I believe), possibly Mill Law but at same time I'm not sure about him and her crossing well...

You say JM is unproven as an event sire but at least he has proven his own ability. Future Illusion however IS unproven and out of a mare who never competed.
I can see why people use JM. He has a lot of TB blood and competes at a high level in SJ (you don't see many TBs jumping at that level). I'd rather use a stallion like him that actually has competed and proven himself than one that hasn't.

I'd use JM over FI any day.

Though agree with most of the above comments.

I think I would have used FO, Miner's Lamp (I think there is still semen for the right mare), C. Dazzler. Is there any Welton Crackerjack semen available? Naturally if there was any Sportsnight semen, I'd go with that LOL!

Well, FI is only 4 so you wouldnt expect him to have proven himself yet.

I like Jaguar Male but for the moment I'd feel more comfortable using Aligator Fontaine who does have eventing stock over here

If you read FSH website, FI's dam was in an accdent as a weanling, hence she was broken but didn't compete, otherwise I am sure she would have.

JM would have to be high on anyones list of stallions to use on a class eventing mare to produce an eventing youngster! an eventer nowadays can get away with having a little more WB in it hopefully to get better results in dressage and showjumping.. if you were trying to breed a showjumper out of the same mare you wouldnt use JM you would use something more powerful. darco lines or burggraaf or capital lines perhaps?

But FI is unproven under saddle. He is a nice type and yes his youngsters have done very well through the futurity so far. But the fact is that he has not proven himself.

There are other stallions out there who have proven themselves but who haven't got such a good marketing machine behind them.

I wouldn't advise anyone to use Cruising directly to breed potential event horses, he is notorious for his 'lack of length' in stride and having had more than a few of his offspring, he does pass it on. Any potential mares would have to have a huge stride for me to use him.

So 2nd generation maybe.
