We have a 17.2 8 year old hunter who we bought as a 2 year old. Everything was going well (county showing, jumping etc) until around 2006 when he started headshaking? We changed his feed, he's had the vet, steriods, CT Scan on his brain, head and teeth and recently had a nerve injection at Oakham vet Hospital. Still he headshakes!

He is too bad to ride comfortably as he throws his front leg up and can unseat the rider. Some days are slightly better than others but hes been known to come in from the field in a right sweat and his nostrils seems all puffy and hard!? He's been at the same livery yard since we had him.

The vet suggested having a nerve cut in his head but wee don't want to do that, the nerve can grow back after a few months so whats the point in putting the horse through that?

Some one suggested that headshaking has a link with over injecting (Flu Jabs etc) in this counrty we inject every year but in otherslike Australia they only inject every five years? There is a product we can buy on the internet called Capstar, but it has to be given when his yearly jabs have run out, has anyone out there used it or heard of it's results?

Someone has suggested using a drug called Rakelin which I have read small amounts about on the internet. I know we can't compete him if he uses the drug but anything would help to give him a better quality of life?
there are controversial statements on the internet about addiction and withdrawal symptoms does anyone know how long we can use it for and how long one injection lasts? Is it an ongoing drug to be used constantly?
HELP!

The horse I'm talking about belongs to my sister. She is only hacking him about at the moment , if that. His head is to bad really for her to ride him a nose net makes no difference at all.

I'm not sure I'd go down the giving drugs route. As far as I am aware, nobody really knows 100% what causes headshaking & every horse displays slightly different symptoms, what works for one may not work for another.

Don't know if you've looked at this site but it does give some advice for treatments that I'd never even have thought of such as applying a small amount of bonjela to the nose to numb it slightly & feed locally produced honey so that the horse gets used to local pollens (I tried this with my horse but unfortunately he didn't like it!) http://www.lincoln.ac.uk/dbs/research/headshaking/

As far as cutting vaccs out go - I wouldn't do that personally. Maybe you'd get away with the flu if he didn't have contact with any other horses but there is no way I'd leave my horse unprotected against Tetanus.
