Headshaking!

My boy, about a week and a half ago, started headshaking in the stable, really violently. He shakes up and down. Got an out of hours call out and the vet said it looked like a mild allergy. His bottom lip swells and the vet noticed little lumps and bumps on his body.
He is recovering from a virus, I don't know if that has anything to do with it.
My friend has just called to say he's doing it again really violently and she is turning him out so he doesn't whack his head on the bars!
I'm waiting for the vet to call me back to discuss.
He seems to only do it when the weather is hot and sunny - when it is cloudy and cool he's fine. It seems fine when he's out, but he is usually very keen to come in when it is fine and warm out.
It has been happening, on and off, since the call-out, but nothing like this severe, as far as I'm aware. On hacks, he starts out a bit, then settles.
As he's in very light work while he's recuperating, I wondered if part of it was psychological / boredom. His new stable neighbour is a bit of a head shaker...
Poor boy, I feel desperately sorry for him as he seems so uncomfortable.
Has anyone had similar experiences and did you find anything made a significant improvement in symptoms. I just want to make him comfortable.

Hi there

Poor boy, If this is an allergy I would try putting vaseline or baby Vick on the inside of his nostrils to catch the pollen before it goes up into the nostril.

There is also a supplement for 'horse hayfever/pollen reactions' by Global Herbs whcih may be of use.

Also check his ear for mites, they only usually move about when its hot.
