my mare as some of you may know had a major problem blah blah blah, that is all sorted now after physio, new saddle and 4months off later. however she still headhsakes, some days hardlys nothing. others she a pain. and before anyone can say anything its nothing to do with teeth, back or saddle. However, she does this wierd thing which is hard to explain, i will try and get a video to make it more clear but here it goes. the headshaking contines int he stable aswell.. so.... she will be quite happy and chilled then violently throw her head up then shes calm again, she does this ALOT! but the strnagest thing is that when i have her empty feed bucket hanging over the manger, she bows her head down so her eye is about 1cm away from it (so not touching) and shuts them partially and looks asif shes being doped and blinks softly when she does this. then throws her head up again then goes back down to do this. its normally after a ride and ive checked her noseband is not too tight and its not that. I know it sounds like nothing but i thought its worth asking. i will get a video asap :) any ideas?

Hi. This doesn't sound like normal seasonal headshaking to me. I would be inclined to get the vet out. Just to give her the once over and give her her a thorough check and observe what she is doing.

My Mare headshakes at flies, so we use lots of fly spray a nose net and showjumpers veil and this works for her.

Tried her on all supplements etc and discovered its the flies.

Just a thought on your mare!

Hi, I have a mare who has weird head shaking, vet says it is not typical headshaking. Have tried everything, my mare is better when she wears a full face mask, something like the Crusader Quiet ride. A lot of funny head movements are because of photosensitivity (sp). Sounds a bit like your mare is trying to hide her eyes from bright light. Not sure, but just a thought. Good luck.

Do you use a noseband? If so, try removing that. I also know of a headshaker that was cured by putting a bigger browband on their bridle as well.
