Does anyone on here have a horse that headshakes and is it a seasonal thing? I am told that my new horse headshakes but it was due to the amount of Rape that was grown in the area. He is now down in Devon with me in the middle of nowhere where nothing is grown and harvested, I hope he's going to be okay this spring and summer. Does anyone else experience this with their horse?

Thank you in advance

Hi,

Our TB used to headshake badly to the point of standing in the field shaking his head as long as he was out.

Tried lots of things including nose nets, uv face masks etc.

Eventually tried a product called Pollenex (the liquid variety). It quite literally cured it overnight. I don't believe in miracle cures but in this case it did the trick.

Hope it helps. Good luck.

I had a horse that was a headshaker. It started when he was 8 years old and I think the amount of rape growing around us may have been the trigger. However even when we moved to an area with no rape he continued to be a seasonal headshaker.

I used a nose net on him and it worked wonders.

My horse has a pollen allergy and rape is the worst thing that affects him.

He has a nose net on when ridden (we get away without one in November, December and January). I use Carl Hester Air Power supplement in his feed and Carl Hester vapour rub before we ride (bit like Vick!).

He also has anti-hystamine tablets and I am currently trying herbs that have been recommended.

It's all a bit trial and error to find out what suits your horse the best, and it can be a worry getting it right. I did "get it wrong" the first year I owned my horse and he ended up having the vet out, Ventapulmin and a couple of weeks off. But I now seem to be managing it ok and last year managed to avoid the vet!

Hope you get on ok, feel free to PM me if you want any advice.

Oh yes, have one. In fact, between my friends and I we have 2. Both take Mixed pollen as advised from vets and last two years nothing. Then mine started again but only when bridled. Which was wierd, took noseband off and we've not really thought about it since :)
