Many of you may know B came down with strangles a few weeks ago. Hes been off his food, had a temp and abcess formed between his cheek bones.
Anyway abcess burst on Tuesday so I have been waiting for the 'he will feel better as soon as it bursts' to happen. It didnt. He was still off food and didnt look at all well.
Brought him in last night (hes in an isolation paddock 24/7 as the only thing he will really eat is grass) and his legs seemed a bit swollen. After standing in for 10 mins they blew up and were really hot. Called vet right away and was told to keep them cool until he arrived. Was pouring water on them with watering cans as cant take him to the hose as he has Strangles, and there was steam coming off all 4 legs. He could hardly move them and had great trouble putting his back leg down after picking it up.
Anyway vet arrived and he has Purpura hemorrhagica which is a complication of strangles
Its very serious and potentialy life threatening
Luckily it was caught quite early and I really hope we got it in time. He was given a shot of steroids and antibiotics. Unfortunatly due to the drugs he had last night his immune system will now be weakend and it will take him longer to recover. This morning his legs are still huge but the heat has gone. He has lots of horizontal cracks across the back of his heels and pasterns due to them swelling up so quickly. I just hope when those injections wear off he doesnt go really bad again. As he wont really eat much hay I gave him a huge bucket of fibre beet last night, and although it was still there at 9.30pm last night it was all eaten this morning
This now explains why his cheeks have seemed so swollen and his lip blew up last week. Vet thought it was just the abcess spreading.
Poor boy looks like c**p and I am so worried about him. Please send him lots of hugs and healing vibes.
