Many of you may know B came down with strangles a few weeks ago. Hes been off his food, had a temp and abcess formed between his cheek bones.

Anyway abcess burst on Tuesday so I have been waiting for the 'he will feel better as soon as it bursts' to happen. It didnt. He was still off food and didnt look at all well.

Brought him in last night (hes in an isolation paddock 24/7 as the only thing he will really eat is grass) and his legs seemed a bit swollen. After standing in for 10 mins they blew up and were really hot. Called vet right away and was told to keep them cool until he arrived. Was pouring water on them with watering cans as cant take him to the hose as he has Strangles, and there was steam coming off all 4 legs. He could hardly move them and had great trouble putting his back leg down after picking it up.

Anyway vet arrived and he has Purpura hemorrhagica which is a complication of strangles

Its very serious and potentialy life threatening

Luckily it was caught quite early and I really hope we got it in time. He was given a shot of steroids and antibiotics. Unfortunatly due to the drugs he had last night his immune system will now be weakend and it will take him longer to recover. This morning his legs are still huge but the heat has gone. He has lots of horizontal cracks across the back of his heels and pasterns due to them swelling up so quickly. I just hope when those injections wear off he doesnt go really bad again. As he wont really eat much hay I gave him a huge bucket of fibre beet last night, and although it was still there at 9.30pm last night it was all eaten this morning

This now explains why his cheeks have seemed so swollen and his lip blew up last week. Vet thought it was just the abcess spreading.

Poor boy looks like c**p and I am so worried about him. Please send him lots of hugs and healing vibes.

Vibes sent - what a horrid thing to happen. Poor B, hope he feels much better soon.

Vibes for Baron - I hope he recovers. I have had experience of Purpura hemorrhagica and it was not good. In the horse I new the sweeling was all around the head and face, which I think is worse than the legs as in Baron's case. I'm sure you are, but try to check him as often as possible I have seen how quickly it can progress.
I have all my fingers and toes crossed for you

Oh no, poor Baron. Those photos you posted last week really showed how the poor boy is suffering, and I think I was one of those deluded posters who said he would feel better when the abcess burst. Sadly not. He really has had the full catalogue of symptoms hasn't he? Sending vibes to hope he is about to turn the corner.

(((((get better Baron)))))

Thank you everyone. He does seem to have had every symptom going bless him. I am now just worried sick incase his legs flare up as quickly as they did last night again.

They were still big this morning but not really hot. I am going down to check on him at lunch time so will update again then.

Vibes for your horsey

Please make sure you look after yourself as well ((hugs)). My lad had strangles and I took a down turn along with him due to all the worry and stress of it.

Gosh....massive hugs and healing thoughts to your horse, this is a real nasty. I do hope things improve soon.

Lots and lots of hugs and healing vibes to your poor boy. He must be so miserable, no idea what's going on and just feeling like cr*p. Thank goodness you caught it early, fingers crossed he'll be okay. xxxx

best of luck honey, this is not easy.

i might mention this heat thing to my vet as Shads had 2 'fits' as i called them prior to having to put her to sleep - one on the day and one 3 days prior. she seemed to recover very quickly on the first one, and i suppose that as she was swollen with air, i wouldnt notice any other swelling... her legs were perfect throughout though...

Thank you everyone for your supportive replies.

He hobbled out of his stable at lunch time, legs still very swollen. Went down a little after walking but still warm.

Home computer is broken so may not be able to update now until Tuesday unless I can borrow parents comp for a while over the weekend. Will update as soon as I can.

Very sorry to hear your boy is so poorly. What a miserable time for you both but thank goodness you caught it early. Sending you lots of positive healing (((((((((vibes))))))))).

Get well soon Baron.
