Well my 5yo Kate had her Sinus's operated on yesterday and although I didn't expect her to look like her usual self after it (I was half expecting tubes from her face) I was quite shocked when I saw her. I spoke to the Vet while I was visiting her yesterday and he said that it went well and there was a cyst in the sinus as he thought but it was much larger than he expected it to be.
She cant come home until next week but I'm visiting her everyday as she was homebred and never camped out away from home before.

She seemed quite happy before the op but hopefully once its healed she'l feel even better.
So please can you all send her some healing vibes.
Have posted some pics so you know what I'm dealing with, but they're not for the faint hearted

Will she always be left with a hollow in her face once it's healed?

I went to look at a horse with that type of facial blemish once, so I assume this is the operation he underwent at some point in his past. He was absolutely fine and perfectly healthy too.

Hope your mare heals without hitch and is home again with you very soon.

Gosh poor Kate.

Sending healing vibes.

Will you have to pack the wound? Or will it be left open to heal? Just nosey.

Hb

hope she gets better soon xxx

can I just ask what her symptoms were and how the vets diagnosed her condition please?
Thanks

Oh dear!Yes I owned a TB mare who was good at accidental damage to both her eyes,so used to skin, bone, blood and drainage tubes coming out of them! Sending healing vibes to you,is she on cross ties to keep her head up my girlie spent 3 weeks on them and coped well which amazed me! All the best that she heals well, sure she will !!!

I'm hoping she wont be left with a hollow but tbh when its as deep as it is I cant see her being left with out some form of dent
frown.gif
could of cried when I saw it though but was trying to be brave for her

Tbh I'm not sure what I'l have to do with it in the future but for the time being it has to be flushed out with a hosepipe.

I'm thinking it will heal from the inside out but others with more experience may be able to advise me differently. I will obviously get full instructions from the vet and follow to the letter but it would be good to know now what I might have to do

She wasn't cross tied last night and she'd just had it done that afternoon, but as you can see in the last picture there was already a little piece of hay in the middle of it

Time will tell I guess

Jeeeeeez, thats one nasty wound! I can't imagine that healing without some trace of a dent or scar. Deep tissue repairs like take careful management and care for it not to get infected. It will take a long time, just be careful of flies at this time of the year. You could consider adding some MSM powder to her hard feed as this encourages new healthy tissue growth. It certainly speeded up the repair on my mare manky hock wound last year.
Good luck.

Is this the lovely horse on the left of your sig? Bless her hope she gets better soon. I reckon it will heal fine so long as you keep her out of the flies until it's well on the way.

Oh that looks nasty!!! Im sure it will heal alot better than you think. My horse Simon ( RIP

) had an operation on a broken rib. Not the same i know but he had an equally nasty wound afterwards. I have attached some pics to let you see how it healed so you can see how well a nasty wound can heal. We to had to flush it out everyday. we did not put any wound ointment on it and yes it healed from the inside out. I hope your horsey heals just as well! These too are not for the faint hearted.

Simon just after his op. The bit under the "U"shaped scar is completley hollow about 3 inches deep.

Hi Josie

I hope your mare recovers well.

Not posted on h&h forum before, just browse and learn, but as my mare fractured her maxcilius sinus a few weeks back I thought I would post you a before and after pic (if they work), as it is amazing how quickly they heal around their heads.
around 10 days after her accident

around 3 weeks after

Good luck vibes to your mare

Wow! Thanks for posting those pictures. I feel much more positive about it now. Its amazing how quickly that healed on your mare, hope mine is speedy too.
Thanks again

Crikey, that looks awful, but it does look nice and healthy. Healing vibes on their way and I am sure you won't see too much when it's healed. better a scar than pain though.

OMG - what a shock for you. Hope she heals well, I swear by Manuka Honey - well worth a try.

Love the pic of the mare and foal in your sig.

I can't see the piccies here at work but my mare had a huge cyst removed from her upper nasal tract (it had pushed the bone out into a big lump) and looked liked Frankenstein's monster when I visited her after the op (yes I cried when I saw her). She had a flushing/drainage tube just below her eye which had been fixed up between her ears and something like 30 staples in a crescent shape on her face. I totally understand how you feel about the wound! I wish I could post pics then we could compare notes
wink.gif

Three years later you would barely know she's had it done. You can see a slight crescent scar but you really have to look and the bone has remodled itself really well. I found it hard to believe the surgeon when he said it would but it has. So the prognoses is good - give me a shout if you want to swap notes
