I was just wondering what people on here thought about how other liveries acted on their yard.

I have often have concerns about what the other livery on my yard does, and sometimes I just think its an accident waiting to happen.

For example, her pony is becoming increasingly bargy, will run her over etc etc, now she doesnt even tell him off (hes 11.2hh!!!).

Today she left him tied on as long a rope as she could, while he was eating his breakfast in the yard, left him there while she went off to do something for a while, with her 2 small children brushing him. My daughter went near him, and he pulled a face that said im going to rip your face off!!!

Now as she'd also tied him so long, I couldnt finish trimming mine for ages, as was worried i was going to get kicked in the face by hers.

She lets her children lead him with no hat, and I can just see its a disaster waiting to happen.

Does anyone else have concerns about other owners on there yard??

(oh yes this is the over fed lami pony)

I don't have horses any more but my pet hate on yards has always been people leaving haynets on the floor for people/horses to trip over. It really narks me!

Ultimately it is the job of the Yard Manager to make sure that relevant health & safety precautions are kept to; so I don't quite know what sort of set-up this is here, but I personally would have a word with the owner/manager.

The problem is in DIY places where perhaps the owner(s) haven't a clue about horsey things and just take the money and let people get on with it, however, as a smallholder myself (who takes in DIY liveries) I think (legally) there is still a duty of care coz if something happens on your property I suspect the insurance company might be stuffy if you couldn't show that (as landowner/yard manager etc) that you hadn't taken every reasonable precaution.

My chief rant is horsey people who smoke. I had someone a few years ago riding my boy - she'd been to equestrian college so should have known better; and I didn't know she was smoking in the yard for a long time until I found out. My place is Grade II listed!!! - plus the potential risk to the horses. I was horrified.

I had a livery a few years ago who had two bargey young Arab horses and one day she went out to catch them and they just barged right into her, breaking her collarbone. She hadn't taught these horses any manners or respect for her space which is why basically it happened in the first place.

Any BHS yard should insist on hard hats and gloves (+ suitable footwear) being worn at all times when leading, and the same for riding (+ body protector) and I think this is a good standard which all yards should attain to. Plus if anyone is in the stable with the horse, then it must be secured, i.e. tied up with a slip knot. Accidents can so easily happen, and its too late when someone's been hurt and is suing the pants off someone.

This is a very small yard, just me and her. Its at someones home, and we are just using the land and stables so the grass doesnt keep having to be topped. So YO doesnt really get involved other then to moan about my horses fly rugs not looking nice.

Its such a pain, Its more not using common sense more then anything.... oh no dont worry about my pony getting kicked, even though he was there 1st, and kids running riot!

Or maybe im really turning into a grumpy old woman lol
