Recently i went to try a showjumper my the fantastic French horse Kannan. He was perfect in every way and so i organised a 5 star vetting to be sure. After the vetting, my vet reported that the horse has a significant hock abnormality which was likely to be inherited and i was seriously advised not to buy him, which i didn't. Has anyone else had problems with Kannan offspring involving bone abnormalities?

are you sure that the problem might come from Kannan? He has been used quite a lot (something like 1230 mares according to the French Stallions website) so if he was throwing problems surely it would have come to light earlier. Perhaps the mare was the problem - it takes two to produce a foal . . . .

As someone else has pointed out, it could quite as easy come through the mare line and not by the sire. He is a very popular jumping stallion who covers a lot of mares per year, so if he was throwing hock abnormalties in his offspring people would not use him.......so I would not necessarily jump to the conclusion that it is the sire....

Hi

I'm Kannan's agent for the UK, Ireland and the US. We defintaely have not heard anything suggesting that he gives anything like this problem to his kids. He does have a slightly straight hind leg, but other than that he is a super super stallion who is rocketing up the stallion rankings.

If you want to see a classic example of a Kannan foal take a look at this link

admitedly he comes from a world top 20 motherline, but look at the style of this kid.

Also, Kannan is a BWP stallion, he just competed for France, lives here and is owned by Alexandrine Hécart (who's French), so I look after him. Super stallion, with very interesting breeding conditions if you are a breeder with at least three mares. Here's is link:

yes i completely understand that it was probably inherited from the mare and i agree that Kannan is a brilliant stud who i would definately be looking to use in the future! thankyou for taking the trouble to give me information!
