So bought my new mare (15.2 tb x 15 yo) Was absolutly smitten with her, just what i wanted a nice forward going hack that has brakes and a kind heart.

Tired her out 3 times hacking, light bit of schooling (but dont plan to school with her) Walk trot and canter etc. She was just as described very high spirited but manageable.

So Its been a just over a month of having her left her for the first week to settle in then started just taking her for light walking hack down the village etc. And all of a sudden she has turned into demon horse! As soon as you ask her to walk on she spins, backs up, rears and plants her head to the ground!

I have rode many problem horses in my time ten times worse than her and not been phased but she really worries me!

I really dont know what to do?! I cant pluck up the courage to ride her and a few other have tried and she is doing the same. Had the vet out to see if it was her back but no, nothing worng with her.

At the minute she is truned out alone so are planning on geting a companion, do i get a horse i feel comfortable on and just use her as a hack no and again when my mum wants to ride? (will she be okay going out in company??)

Or do i just bite the bullet and sell her on? Not knowing where she will end up as she is 15 ....?

Biscuits for whoever gets this far! :o Any advice/help/new horse;) Appreciated!

Are you riding her in company? And what is your management?

Is she kept on her own, and what tack are you using on her?

Was she vetted?

Saddle? And has feed, turnout time etc changed at all? Did you hack her in company before & is she hacking alone now? Basically any changes at all?

I had a mare who was an absolute angel. Suddenly (overnight) she became a nightmare to hack. Spinning and running away, spooking at nothing etc etc. Turned out to be her ovaries. Sounds exactly the same and I expect if they had this problem with her before they have tried to sell her before this came to light. Definately get the vet to check her out. Good luck!

I was chatting to a friend this morning who described a very similar situation when she bought her lovely mare. She realised that her pasture was much lower in magnesium than the mare's previous pasture and within a week of feeding a magnesium supplement the mare returned to being calm and lovely.

Also, when I moved to a place with land I tried my boy on his own. He seemed fine, but soon became more stressy and therefore rather dangerous out hacking. Now he has company he is a lot more chilled.

Doesn't sound like a Demon horse to me - just one who is either unconfident (often the root cause of napping) or in pain.

Phone up the vendors and see what they say.

^^^^^^ THIS ^^^^^^

Give the seller a call and see what they have to say. It may be they experienced the same when they first had her (some like to test out new owners, or are just not confident in themselves) or between you you could possibly work out if there has been a change in routine that has unsettled her.

Did the seller ride when you viewed her to buy? Did you hack alone or just in company? Was there a vetting?
