Heart murmors + irregular heartbeats

Does anyone have any experience/information about them?


Horse seems to have both, and I am taking him in for a second opinion on Monday but would good to hear other peoples experiences. What are his prospects as a riding horse?

When we sold one of my sisters about 4 years ago the vetting said he had irregular beats at rest, but this was due to a lazy valve as as soon as he started work of any kind it would beat perfectly normally. He was a PC/RC eventer and went to exmoor stag hunting and through summer an allrounder. Was fine for him.

My last horse had a heart murmur which she raced with and was fine! It didn't effect her in any way, the other thing that we were told is that they do sometimes grow out of it. There are different types, one which is nothing to worry about and another which is more serious. Fingers crossed for your boy.
 
I bought one with a murmour that the vet said he would never get anywhere!!!!. (still bought him but for a fraction of the price)When i sold him it had gone so it was probably a virus which can cause them. He hunted all day and was fine went on to event too.

I was told they are common and can be caused by a virus
 
It depends which side of the heart the murmor is on. My oldie was diagnosed a few years back and leashurt did a doplar scan and her aortic valve was leaking which was causing the noise and irregular heartbeat. They told me it was a grade 3 which is pretty bad but I could still do my dressage and hacking etc... I was worried that she would drop dead while I was riding her but they assured me that even if she did have a heart attack which is extreamly rare they dont just drop dead they go very slowly so I would have time to get off. But trust me shes 23 now and still going strong and last time she had a check up it has dropped to a grade 1 as she has now fully retired due to a back injury and chilling out has reduced the strain on her heart

I bought a section A for my kids and at five he was diagnosed with a heart murmur..... a grade five, which is about as bad as it gets.

Was advised by vet that it wasnt safe for kids to ride him, so found a home as a companion.

But before he went the girls did one last show on him, on the hottest day of 2003..... like a million degrees, and we hacked 3 miles there and back and competed all day..... he was fine

She often used to come and look at him before he went and was perplexed as to why the murmur didnt seem to affect him, but to sound sooo serious.

I suppose we will never know!

I used to ride a mare with a third heartbeat. She pased a 5 star vetting and I took her out on LOTS of 4 hour long hacks cantering down hills up hills everywhere and she was fine (I didn;t canter all the time

). Also a horse at my old riding school had a heart mumur and he went on to be a superb showjumper and still is.
 
I have not been on as am away and just checking emails so not sure what has been happening with him (presuming it's J)... Grace showed a heart murmur when she had colic to the point she needed surgery and the vets explained that this can happen when a horse is suffering pain.

She had an ECG when she recovered and all was fine.
