heart murmur

Hi, my old pony (28) has a heart murmer though I dont know what grade. Hes fine though obviously retired! still bucks and farts round the field. Only scary bit was yesterday when he had to have 3 teeth out by the dentisit. Vet there to sedate him and was only willing to give him half doses with his heart. Unfortuntely it wasnt enough and she had to reluctantly trickle some more in whilst telling me the risks! I stood there shaking and praying but it all turned out ok and 2 hours later he was back out in the field.
Bit of a pointless reply this, but just wanted to let you know that they seem to cope with it fine you just have to try and reduce their stress and make sure vets/dentisits etc all know about it.

Thanks goldypops - our horse has just been diagnosed and as she is only young it's a real shock. Vet has said not to do anything strenuous with her but as she is an eventer that means she won't be able to do what she enjoys. Not sure either whether it might be possible to breed from her or whether that might put too much strain on her heart.

Sorry to hear about it in such a young horse. Breeding may be an option but something I would discuss with your vet - also find out if its hereditary (I have no idea).

Just had another thought and absolutely no idea if it applies! but I know in babies/young children the doctors sometimes detect a heart murmer (they did with my son at 9m old) but its someting they grow out of and a few years later when I had him checked there was no murmer. May be worth looking into? I dont know how old your horse is??

The vet thinks it may have been the result of a virus and is doing further tests. Horse is eight - so not very young but definately not old! Very talented as well. It has just been such a shock cause although we knew she wasn't quite right we didn't think it was anything like that. Thanks for your input.
