Freddie(10 yro sprocker) was found to have a grade 2? heart murmur when he had his jabs last august, I was given the options of a scan or bring him back in six months to see if it had changed, so fast forward to February and we saw a different vet who diagnosed grade2/3 so opted for a scan so they could see what was going on, he's in today having his scan, so just waiting for a phone call to see what they've found. In himself he's supper fit and we walk between 10 and 15 miles everyday (I'm retired), we've just got back from a few days in Derbyshire and he's been flying round the hills like a 2 yro, so I'm hoping there's nothing too seriously wrong, has anyone else had a dog with a heart murmur and been able to stabilise it with medication, or are we on a downward trajectory now, given his age?

Many years ago a vet told me my dog wouldn’t make it past 10 probably due to heart murmur. He lived until he was 18 and died after a stroke

Every lurcher I’ve owned was diagnosed with a heart murmur and none of them ended up with heart failure and all of them were very lively and ran for miles. I was told by one vet my last lurchers murmur was a grade 4!!! I lost her at 13 due to arthritis in her hips which couldn’t be controlled by pain killers so I made that decision…I think as long as you keep them fit and slim it helps the heart

Thanks for your replies, the vet has just called to say it's leaky valve but otherwise he's fine & they just want to check him up in six months, so they can listen to his heart again when he has his boosters, OH has now gone to fetch him as I have my IFA over shortly to talk grown up stuff - he's going to be ruined tonight, the wood burner is lit and his throw is freshly washed and on the sofa next to me waiting for him:)

For anyone else looking info - my lad was diagnosed with a grade 2 murmur age 7, and put on furosemide and vetmedin. He’s about to turn 12, and gets 6 monthly checks on his heart (stethoscope, no sedation or scans) and he’s not had any further deterioration *touch wood*. He came through a cruciate operation aged 10 as well, with no problems.
