My daughter has a 5 year old. He has evented successfully this year and no problems at all til his last event . After both the dressage and the show jumping he started to 'pant'. It was not that warm and he completed the cross country within the time and recovered quickly. Any ideas?. He is on a rest period til December so we havent had it checked out yet. We thought we would see if it is just a virus that would clear first. Should we be looking into it now?

Any vets or student vets out there? There was no lack of energy cross country so we thought not heart probably - could it be the start of a respiratory desease eg COPD? He has just gone on to hay as the grass is insufficient now. He does not weeze but does sometime give a single cough when just going out on exercise - otherwise nothing other than this single occasion of hyperventilation .

My first inclination would be to have got a blood test done immediately - to rule out a virus. Then you can start checking everything else off the list.
