Hiya

Last few days my mare has lost her appetite for her hard feed and I can't help thinking it may be down to the weather that she is just not as hungry? She's still eating her hay and drinking...

Does anyone else have a horse that eats less in hot weather? Or should I be concerned?

Thanks

Probably due to the fact that we have had some very warm weather following wet and the grass would have grown (a grass flush). She has probably eaten a fair bit and is full. Happens to most horses except the really greedy ones :)

OK thank you....that's what I thought but after a few days of it you start thinking all sorts when they've never done it before! She's merrily munching hay so not too concerned about the food - its more trying to get her to have her breathing meds

This was the problem I had with my mare, I had to give her a fair amount of low calorific feed to get the bute and supplements she is on, into her. But she wasn't eating up. So in the end I bought a small bag of speedi beet as our local supplier bags up a large bag into lots of small bags and sells them for 80p a bag. They last forever so its much better. They do that with linseed pellets too. This encouraged her to eat so try that and see if it works - borrow a handful off someone and make sure it is soaked for ten minutes before mixing with her supplements.
