Horse is shod in front and barefoot behind, has been for 2 years. He had a mild bout of lami in spring which is why I am worried.
Today he came in (he's out all day, in at night) with one very hot hind foot. The others are fine. Not lame I add. A bit of a pulse, again only in this foot... He's on restricted grazing with a small haylage net and fast fibre at night. Had a poke about but couldn't see anything abnormal and no flinching. No reaction to coronary band pressure. I'm used to checking his feet but this is a fair bit hotter than usual.
Any ideas? 3 of the barefoot oldies are footy at the moment due to the mud. Could thrush cause this amount of heat? Mud fever? I worry about the shape of his foot as they are now very asymmetrical and the heels are very low. Though farrier is happy with them as he is sound - horse used to require trailers on back feet when he was shod.
Farrier is coming Friday so will what he thinks, but - any ideas?
