Hi

Last week (Fri) my horse was shod, he has very flat sensitive feet with thin soles at the best of times and unfortunately the farrier slipped on one of his back feet and nicked the sole by the toe making him bleed. He flushed the wound immediately with iodine and packed it and then proceeded to shoe as usual. I was advised to keep it clean for 24 hours and then carry on as normal

The horse was fine through the weekend, but on Monday he had heat in the foot and by Tues was lame (not hopping but noticeably) so he came back and removed the shoe, reopened and flushed it again and applied a hot poultice. I have continued this and he has had 2 days hot poultice and then dry poultices.

Tonight he trotted up almost sound, just a little short strided in that leg. BUT he has heat in the foot still and a strong pulse. There is no swelling in the leg and the poultices haven't drawn anything out.

Having spoken to the farrier again im going to continue over the weekend and see how he is on Monday, and they will come out again if needed. Or the vet if required.

Is it possible that the heat and pulse could be because the sole of his foot is sore from the cut? Or bruised? Im looking for input from other people as it has me a bit baffled.

Thanks in advance
