Heat in hoof after shoeing

Hi can anyone give me some advice please. I am sat here worrying over my boy.
He was shod this morning (fronts only) he was last shod 10 weeks ago (he had a field injury on his leg so was on box rest and vet said to wait )
He seemed fine at the time of shoeing - turned him out for the day. Came back to the yard to bring in and feed. He seemed slightly lame and foot sore , especially turning. He didn't want his dinner which isn't him at all! Just been back up to check him, dinners gone but there's heat in his one hoof. I've cold hosed him and put him to bed.
Farrier is coming back out tomorrow to check him but in the mean time what do u think is wrong?
He is never lame he's a tough cookie so he must hurting :(

With this problem starting just after shoeing it would appear to be connected to that. I imagine that it's nail bind. Your horse will be uncomfortable tonight but hopefully when the farrier comes back tomorrow he'll pull the shoe & remove the nail that's causing the problem. He'll probably check the foot all over incase there is something else but I imagine it will be a nail that isn't where it should be. Good Luck
 
Ok thanks for your reply - should I give him a bute? I thought I'd better not because I want the farrier to b able to assess him 100% but don't want him hurting
 
I'm not a great user of bute so I can't tell you how long the effects of a sachet may last. Someone else may be able to help re this or may be you can google an answer. Either way you don't want the effects of bute when the farrier comes as he'll need to know if there is any pain when he pressure test the hoof & also removes the shoe.
 
Ok I really appreciate your advice. I will leave him off the bute tonight I'll just keep cold hosing him between now and the morning. The farriers coming out at 10.30 am so not too long. Made him a really big thick bed to relax on
 
I think you'll find that most owners of shod horses on this forum will have had this happen at least once. It doesn't matter how good your farrier is everyone can make an error & end up with this happening. I think this will be sorted out tomorrow morning & your horse will be fine. :)
