My horse came in last week with a loose shoe that was still on the foot but the inside nails had come out of the foot and twisted on the shoe. I called the farrier, who was booked to reshoe the next day anyhow, and he couldn't come earlier so he box rested for 24hrs - and didn't seem at all bothered about the foot/shoe. After a normal shoeing I put him back out and all was well. Brought him in a few hours later and his near fore leg/foot was very warm and he was walking slightly short but no swelling. Bute in his dinner and cold hosed. Next morning he's walking and turning better but still heat in the one leg and foot so cold hose and breakfast then out. I've done this over the weekend - no work but out in the field (he's at home so can keep an eye on him) and then cold hosed and bute in night feed as anti-inflammatory. Trotted up tonight sound but still heat in the one leg/foot. I've not given him bute since last night so he's obviously not uncomfortable and if anything, he's getting more comfortable, but I'm concerned about the heat and something brewing...I don't want to get back on until I'm sure he's 100%.
Anyone have any suggestions with this? The coincidence of it happening in the foot with the loose shoe worries me. Currently planning to just gently long rein during this week of snow and cold and see how he is at the end of the week but would be interested if anyone has experience of this. TIA!
(Having just read the post about having a nightmare with keeping horses healthy and with my last boy being pts 3 months after I bought him due to recurring colic, I get very anxious when something is even slightly off)!
