Does anyone remember the rugs that had silver foil-type strips in them and what they were called? If not, is there anything similar being made now? Ta v much.
Yes FAL do silver lined rugs. Someone said they haven't got the license to use the silver technology now though. So hopefully another manufacturer will be making them soon.
Not sure if they are similar to what you are looking for, but 'Back On Track' rugs are have ceramic threads to reflect heat, more a therapeutic thing than keeping warm though and they are a touch on the pricey side
As above they were Flectalon rugs, but think there is also something made now called Mirotec blankets or something like that (you may need to google it to get the correct spelling!).
Theres also Back on Track that is made from a ceramic infused material (no foil) to reflect the horses body heat that are supposed to be excellent.
I remember these rugs but havent seen one for years. They had little strips of foily stuff as filling and were very lightweight but warm. Inexpensive too. Flectalon does ring a bell.
If anyone knows if you can still get them Id love to buy another one.
I could sell you some of my horse's body heat? I am thinking of seeing if the National Grid want to take on some of the heat he produces, it just is not believable until you touch him how warm one horse can be.
Alternatively, how about a thermatex under a normal rug? Mine lived out, clipped, 24/7 until he was 5 (and had to come and live with me and adapt to stabled life in the winter) in a thermatex under a no-fill rainsheet. I think thermatex (or equivalent) are pretty much the best idea when layering for warmth.
Funny how some are warm and some aren't. Hector is much warmer than HH yet he's more TB; HH is maybe colder as he uses all his energy pumping the heat to his extremities?
I've found some flectalon dog beds which are fleece with reflective inner; the largest they do is 120cm x 75cm, so maybe I'll just get a couple of those. Or maybe I'll have to sew two together to make them fit.
Is it for inside or outside? I have heard of people modifying single duvets?
B is stupidly hot, it's not normal. The snow last year was the first time he has ever had to have anything more than a MW rug on, and even now he is living out, fully clipped, 24/7 in a MW rug (with neck, I'm not that mean!) and is jolly happy about it too. In fact I think he is hoping (as am I!!) than he is going to get to winter out this year....no-one on the yard has mentioned having to bring them in yet, so I am keeping quiet!
They're both in crew yards so v airy but sheltered, if that makes sense. Have got duvets but they get so bulky with all the other rugs on as well. Maybe they'd like goose down ones better?
the Back On Track rugs are very good, you're welcome to try mine on him for a night or two to see if it makes a difference.
Otherwise, i'd prob try fleecy rug + duvet or 2 + stable rug + turnout rug on top, i guess, like the Princess and the Pea but in reverse...
I've got a Flectalon one in my garage that I need to get round to listing on ebay...
It was my old boy's and he was a boxwalker so hasn't had much use. It went to be professionally cleaned and has been in my heated garage ever since!
Baydale - no, sadly it's approx a foot smaller than that
I wasn't sure how big you were looking for! However, you may have prompted me to get round to listing on ebay as it's clearly a time when people are interested!
I use my back on track rugs religously and they really do make a difference to my horses way of going.
Unlike other rugs on the market the ceramic is melded into the entire fabric, whereas with other products you will only find the benefit from the area which has the main item eg magnets in it.
The mesh rug costs £165 but I use it to layer underneath other rugs in the colder weather, I have also used it as a sweat rug on its own. I have turned out in it in dry weather and I also use it before and after riding and at competitions.
If I put the BoT rug in between 2 dressage tests my horse stays as supple for the second test as he was at the end of the first.
I have also found that with a sharp horse that they are more rideable as their muscles are warmed up and they feel good so they don't tend to be as bad.
If you would like any more info please do contact me. As well as the rugs they do a blanket which is 1mx1m which you could attach underneath you rug. I think these are about £50
TE - I think the blanket might be the best option as I've already got an FMB rug for warm-up/cool down/therapy so I wouldn't need the all-singing all dancing BoT one.
SallyS - I'll go and have a look on Ebay now.
Megan - I'd already found those when I googled thanks, will call them later.
It was Flectalon and they were part of a Universal rug made by Greenham Rugs, now sadly out of business. Same principle as the PE Buster Trio rugs but about twenty years too early! Made in England and couldn't compete with the prices of the rugs made overseas iirc so ceased trading about 15 years ago.
Isn't the Buccas Smartex heat reflecting? A client of mine had one years ago (she ran a tack shop and it was some sort of demo model) and it was the freakiest rug ever! Because of the rules of the yard/barn where she stabled, the horse wore it in and out, 24/7, which, you can imagine, encompassed a MUCH larger temperature gap than you'd ever find here, and the horse was NEVER cold or too hot. She looked like a foil wrapped sausage but it absolutely worked as promised. It also cost silly money but perhaps they're cheaper here.
