Just wondering what other people have done with their horses who have a heave line/flaring nostrils due to COPD. Horse is currently on retirement livery and long term its not looking good.
I'm sorry to say, but we had to pts our old pony she had copd & was struggling to breath just being retired & out in the field. Steroid injections didn't work either & she got so bad I just couldn't watch her struggle anymore.
I hope yours is not as bad as our little lady was xxxxx
his heave line got a little better when I last saw him last week but he was still flaring his nostrils. I dont think steroids are going to work at this stage but when I last asked the vet he refused because of the laminitis risk. Im not sure whether to get the vet in mainly because Im already paying off a huge vet bill.
Bad she was also prone to laminitis which made managing her more difficult anyway. She was physically struggling near the end & just looked miserable stood in her field wheezing her head off (we didn't have stables). She did go downhill pretty quickly which made the decision to pts a little easier. It was hard seeing her go from a whizzy, little jumping pony (was 11.2hh & 13yrs) to looking like a poor oldie & I knew the time was right. xxx
