Ive had my horse for a month now and I had to mvoe yards in the 2nd week. This week hes started breathing heavy. The yard Im at has about three fields surrounding the yard that have got rapeseed in them. Could he have an allergy to it or what else could it be? I had the vet out last week to check his breathing and he said he was fine then which he was. Also just wondering if I could send him back? He was 5 stage vetted a month ago when I bought him. Im preying its not COPD my last horse had this and I really couldnt cope if he had it.

Also he had a cut I think its a cut he has a bald patch on his neck but today Ive noticed that a lump has come up just at the edge of this. Any ideas what this could be?

Please no nasties.

Is he breathing heavily during exercise or all the time? Is there a cough at all?

A lot of horses suffer from a lot of different allergies....this year seems to have been particularly bad because it has been so dry for so long.....

If he was fine when he was vetted, and fine when the vet came out, I would very much doubt it is COPD, as I would imagine that would present itself continuously.

My older horse has had to have ventapulmin (sp!?) this year as she appeared to have an allergy to the rapeseed flower. She is a headshaker, and rape has always been a big trigger, but this year she had a continuous cough too.

silverstar - your vet is best to advise you on this. Stop worrying and start enjoying. I can understand your concern if you have had a horse with problems before, which is why you had a 5 star vet check. A lot of things with horses are transient, they get over them. Most chronic problems can be managed. If it was an issue that should have been picked up - well deal with that when you have more information.

You sound like you are a bit stressed out and trying to cope with a lot on your own.

I am a worry wort with my horses, but very rarely has anything been a long term issue, ie more than 12 months.

I really hope that things turn aroundfor you, just remember that keeping a positive attitude is better for YOU.
