Hi we have a big gypsy cob x shire/ clydesdale (or similar breeding) he has always suffered with slight cracked heals, but this summer his heals have been bleeding quite abit and lots of little cracks all over his heels. The farrier has said he thinks its mites but we cant frontline them while he has these open wonds does anyone have any idea how we can treat this? any ideas greatly appricated.

I think the best thing to do would be to get your vet to have a look, as I know that this sort of problem can get out of hand quite quickly. I have had some experience of this problem and we clipped the legs and used dilute hibiscrub and then rinsed and dried the areas thoroughly, we did this 3 times a day. these were chronic cases and we were under the supervision of dermatologists. I think you could make it worse if you treated it without getting it looked at first, hope this helps:)

our heavys get two detromax injections early in the year which seems to stop the itchy leg thing. we also have some other heavy legged horses which get itchy legs they get detromaxed too. some still get the odd scab but they are loads better when detromaxed. when they do have sores if they are the clipped ones then the have them hibi scrubed (very diluted) and then we have some steriod cream from vets to put on them. this works a treat. out heavy which can not be clipped as show horses would be done the same just bit harder due to the hair!

just spoken to the vets i got to go pick up the detromax injection and some cream will give him the injection and see how he goes thankyou for your feedback.:)
