Hi All,

I wondered if anyone could point me in the direction of a website that actually shows you how to plait a heavy horse.

Also can anyone recommend any where that i could buy 7ft6 rugs, 6.5" Bits and huge over-reach & brushing boots etc.

Thanks in advance

The Horseware Rambo XL is a great turnout that comes in 7'6". Ridingbitz and Neue Schule both do very large bits... I've definitely seen a similar thread on here before, try some searches!

Go to The Shire Horse Forum - they have lots of friendly people on there who know loads about heavy horses and can point you in the right direction about plaiting. As for the rugs - I got my 7ft 6in from Equestrian Clearance - they do rugs for "big boys and girls".

for heavy horses - Mark todd are the best fitting rugs in my opinion

for bits - just search the net is the best way - its what I have to do

brushing boots and overreach - you will be very lucky

It is far easier to get someone to show you - a lot of the local heavy horse societies are very friendly and helpful. Different breeds have different methods of plaiting.

I have not bought this rug, but this looks like it could be what you are after

I can recommend this seller and they do up to 7'3. Their Exmoor comes up large so a 7'3 might fit.

I have found the Shires rug a good fit as they have large necks and chests. Our clydesdales have only needed 7' rugs as both have been 16.3.

There are various 6.5" bits also on ebay if you search for them. I have used some XL boots on mine, but as said, they are not huge horses.

Hi
We used to show Shires many years ago, to plait up we used to use wool braids and turretts (sp?) so that the horse looked like this:

(not my pic btw!)

a quick google finds this dvd: http://www.heavyhorseworld.co.uk/in...d=12&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=53&vmcchk=1
which looks like a good demo - I vaguelly remember the chap from when we were showing.

Hope that's helpful!

Good luck and I hope you do well. I am doing a few local shows with Farra Clydesdale this year for some fun and experience and hope to find some ridden heavy horse classes for her next year when she is seven. She is taking a long time to grow into herself, hence taking it slowly.

She is does attract attention at the shows, especially the ones where she does the 2'3 and 2'6 SJ classes - grade A in a carthorse body bless her, she enjoys jumping so much.

At least you don't have to deal with white hairy legs with your chap, they alone can take an hour to do when filthy to get them ready for the ring.

I use to work with show shires and we could plait up manes and tails with our eyes closed..
I might be wrong as we never had percherons but i think they are not plaited all they way down the neck like shires, just either half or three quater down the neck depending on whether a mare or working gelding.
